"I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to smite him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?"

micma

Another very good question. You should definitely report this to the police but in this day and age it is best to let God smite your neighbor.

Exactly, You, and only you, are responsible for your actions. You/we are born with the knowledge and/or the ability to discern right from wrong and can only base our actions on what we know at the time. To do otherwise would be the equivalent of a lie.

If there is to be a final judgment, God will do the judging.
Doesn%u2019t the bible say, %u201CJudge not lest you be judged?

As far as Bush and what he believes about his actions in Iraq is concerned, I would have to say that it is entirely POSSIBLE that morale right and wrong played no part in his decisions.

Thank you. I don't see any reason to resort to name calling or telling someone that they're viewpoints or beliefs are wrong in anyway, just to have a discussion. In fact, nothing incites me more than people who resort that kind of dirty-handed fighting instead of engaging in intellectual arguments for the sake of learning something new or gaining a new perspective. It's nice to know that other people recognize that, and practice it also. =)

A trolley is coming down the track and it is going to run over and kill 5 people. A man standing next to the switch can flip the switch so the trolley goes down a different track where it will run over and kill 1 person. He flips the switch and kills one to save 5. Was this the right thing to do?

5 patients are in a hospital. They need organ transplants to survive, but the hospital cannot get donor organs in time to save them. A healthy man walks into the hospital. The doctors harvest his organs, thereby killing him, but saving the 5 patients. Was this the right thing to do?

Read the Discover magazine interview with Marc Hauser from the May issue, this year. He makes some very interesting points, including that people give the same answers to objective tests of moral reasoning regardless of religious background.

HopeinGOD:

Your attitude and the character that you project in your comments (those that I have read) speaks of a fine person with a rare honesty and one who tries to live by what you say.

I do not hold the same opinion of the bible nor of Jesus as you do, But as I have mentioned before, what motivates you to do %u201Cthe right thing%u201D is of less importance than the fact that you actually endeavor to do the right thing.

Comments like yours and jennmarie620%u2019s, set a good example for other posters as to civility.

if it is ok for fascist nazi islamic muslims to kill all non muslims everywhere.... is it ok for the non muslims to kill all fascist nazi islamic muslims???

Wouldn't killing 5.1 BILLION people (the number of non muslims in the world) be the very definition of barbarism???
Or is it fascist nazi islam%u2019s way of solving global warming???

Switching Sides: Inside The Enemy Camp
But then in 2000, well before his arrest, something happened which would make Abas question everything he believed in: a fatwa, a religious edict, was issued by Osama bin Laden.

"It should be understood that killing Americans and Jews anywhere found are the highest act of worship and the highest form of good deeds in the eyes of Allah," Simon quotes bin Laden.

Abas and his fellow commanders were ordered to read the fatwa to their men and make sure they carried it out. The others obeyed, but Abas refused. It was his moment of truth. He firmly believed that jihad was to be fought only on the battlefield in defense of Islam; he had always been taught that the killing of civilians had nothing to do with holy war and that it was forbidden.

The fatwa justified killing non-Muslim civilians everywhere.

He said, "What is right is what makes you truly happy - so long as it is not at the expense of any other living creature." Posted by jennmarie620 at 02:17 PM : May 08, 2007

Sometimes what is right--does not make you happy right then--but later on, as understanding and maturity comes in--right--works out. for instance, many children would argue that staying up playing video games and not going to school would make them happy--but in the long run, it would not be good for them. Many grown ups could argue that using drugs or smoking is good for them, but later as they die from the effects and as others have to assume the burden of them--they may have second thoughts. The bible is actually pretty clear about "right" and wrong, but to really get it--God must be more than a theory to a person, and someone thought of only on Sunday or on Easter. If one expects a "Supreme Being" to ultimately decide whether any of us are good enough to be in his house or must exist elsewhere--it would be best to find out HIS personal take on right--then decide if it is worth our temporary existence on earth for 70 to 100 years--to do what he wants in order to spend eternity with him--OR..if 70 to 100 years is a good trade off for spending eternity separated from Him. His version of right, will be the one used in Judging us, not each of our own version of right.

...but on doing the right things in life simply because they are the right things to do. Posted by jn122736 at 01:40 PM : May 08, 2007

What is the right thing to do? Isn't that based on YOUR perception? You cannot rely on individual ideas of right or wrong--because they vary from person to person. Right now, Bush and others think the right thing to do is to have a war in Iraq. The lies and killing and torture done as a part of this war are righteous to them.. Never mind what scripture says about killing or what Jesus says about being kind to enemies and turning the other cheek. The flaw: Your version or my version of "right" does not mean something is right. It is just our personal take on it. The bible says that if one is filled with God's Holy Spirit, then ITS presence in you will guide you and prick your conscience to what is right or not--but that humans are NEVER to rely on or trust the words of a man, no matter who he is (or what religious position he may hold) because a man is still a man, subject to all the flaws, agendas and sins of men. Right...all about perception, God DOES have a level of "right" in mind, but who can be sure they are following it, if His Spirit does not dwell within them? Hint: most Christians are not serving God--and many in that boat, do not know that they do not serve God.

'Right' and 'Wrong' are subjective.

Most humans have so many sets of rules surrounding them that essentially, NOTHING can be right at any time.

A friend of mine said perhaps the simplest and most honest explanation of what is 'right'

He said, "What is right is what makes you truly happy - so long as it is not at the expense of any other living creature."
