The US never looked more alone than now. I guess this will go down as another defeat for us just like vietnam, somalia, beirut and other places we ran from I can't remember. It's very difficult to feel sorry for any other than the iraqui people since they didn't want this war and never had a choice being pinned by an insurgency made up of so many factions and an incompetent american military incapable of defending them. The entire thing is a sham by the Republican party and the fanatical christians. I can't believe they suckered the american people once again with some cheap patriotism, toby keith songs and empty speeches that had no substance, only lies.

lars-

You do a lot of fantasizing about them. Perhaps you and your "counselor", Pastor Ted should go over there and save them while you get to "know them" better. (You may enjoy the camels as well in "that way".)

In contrast to Blair, Cheney had this to say yesterday:

"the American people will not support a policy of retreat."

----------------

In contrast to himself, he had this to say in 1992:

In 1992, the United States Secretary of Defense during the war, *** Cheney, made the same point:

"I would guess if we had gone in there, I would still have forces in Baghdad today. We'd be running the country. We would not have been able to get everybody out and bring everybody home.

And the final point that I think needs to be made is this question of casualties. I don't think you could have done all of that without significant additional U.S. casualties, and while everybody was tremendously impressed with the low cost of the (1991) conflict, for the 146 Americans who were killed in action and for their families, it wasn't a cheap war.

And the question in my mind is, how many additional American casualties is Saddam (Hussein) worth? And the answer is, not that damned many. So, I think we got it right, both when we decided to expel him from Kuwait, but also when the President made the decision that we'd achieved our objectives and we were not going to go get bogged down in the problems of trying to take over and govern Iraq."

The Iranians are not stupid. The predominatly Shia south hasn't the violence that exists in Anbar and the Bagdhad area for two reasons:

A more homogenous population resulting in less sectarian violence and because the Iranians know they can conduct their business better with the ethics challenged Iraqi forces in the area than they could with the Brits.

The Iranians must still be laughing right up their sleeve at the neocon's stupidity in removing the gatekeeper Hussein that kept Iran out of SE Iraq for decades.

if local troops are able to secure the southern part of the country ........ if the security there is sufficient %u2014

There is the old weasel clause. This is nothing more than a political quash of the anti war movement.
