"I hereby determine as of this date that the Taliban controls no territory within Afghanistan and modify the description of the term 'territory of Afghanistan controlled by the Taliban' to reflect that the Taliban controls no territory within Afghanistan, " U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said in a statement published in the Federal Register.
The statement is a technical amendment to a presidential order which imposed sanctions against the regime.
The order, issued by former U.S. president Bill Clinton, had covered restrictions on property and transactions within the " territory of Afghanistan controlled by the Taliban."
Armitage's statement means that the above description in the order was no longer valid.
The judgment was made despite the fact the U.S. troops are still hunting down remnants of the Taliban, including its leader Mohammad Omar.

Frank, it has been the campaign strategy of the republican party for several years now to make up things and use them for character assinations. Remember the nonsense they made up about Gore saying that he claimed to have invented the internet? Gore said nothing of the kind, he said he was instrumental in the implementation of the internet. And he was, he was the driving force in congress to obtain funding for the information super highway. George Allen even tried to 'swiftboat' Jim Webb, but Web fought back and won. Those tatctics will not work anymore, the American people are on to them. I have no idea how they intend to win any elections now.

OBL spends his own money improving communities in which he operates, that is how he gains and keeps support.
The issue is not whether the US had a legitimate excuse to invade Afghanistan, the fact is the Soviet Union occupied Afghanistan for about 12 years before giving it up as a lost cause.
The US invasion and occpation will meet with a similar fate.
Invading Afghanistan was totally pointless and a waste of lives & money except for those tiny few in the Bush crime syndicate who have profited handsomely from that wasted effort.
"Terrorism" is a tactic adopted by the desperate and will never be eliminated, so having a "war on terrorism" is totally pointless.
Murdering Osama Bin Ladin, or any other "terrorist leader," will have no affect whatsoever on al qaida or terrorism.
