Why didn't the United States arrest and torture Anwar al-Awlaki when he dined at the Pentagon shortly after the 9/11 attacks?

I have read several comments on here about Alwaki need to be put on trail. Well he was in absentia in Nov 2010 in Yemen for charges of plotting to kill foreigners and being a member of the terrorist group. Wether you agree with it or not he was tried and convicted and I see this strike as nothing more than the US being a Bounty Hunter for the Yemeni goverment.

The ACLU, while well-meaning, is tragically wrong. The archaic rules of war can no longer be fairly applied when enemy combatents are not geographically or county specific any longer. They target innocent bystanders, while our military targets their soldiers. Don't talk to me about "rules". I am proud to see my government taking this battle to the enemy on their doorstep, rather than waiting for the enemy to bring the battle to my homeland. These terrorists will not go away, they must be exterminated. The ACLU is trajically misguided and hurting our country.

They always have been. The ACLU is a bunch of what about my rights and the heck with how it effects you. Morally abstract in that regard and bankrupt on principles they persist in this way. You have it exactly right in your perspective and the rest of the USA needs to understand just how morally misguided they are politically.

Looks like this is a new precedent. An american citizen can be summarily executed by the state with no rights or trial.

American citizens who commit high treason and actively wage war against the United States are either killed or executed if captured, enough said.

Man you are stupid and have lost sight of reality. If general citizens like you and I were being smeared from the planet then your comment would have validity but since your buddy was a bad guy preaching hate for YOU and sending mindless followers to kill YOU, then it is a justifide kill.

This guy had clearly identified himself as being aligned with a terrorist organization involved in numerous attacks on US interests and citizens....as far as I am concerned, that made him an enemy combatant, which subrogated his rights as a US citizen. I see no logical argument for not taking him, and anyone else like him, out when the opportunity presents. I commend those involved for a job well done.
