actually, it's time for the US to get out of the middle east altogether. Just look at the map. It's a muslim caliphate being created right before our eyes. This whole "arab spring" is a happy-sounding load of crapola. Egypt is now run by the muslim brotherhood and all of the unrest isn't "freedom fighters fighting for democracy". Democracy is the last thing they want. Note the only territories that are relatively stable are iraq and gaza and they are being surrounded and soon to be devoured by this spreading cancer. Iran is laughing at us and the sanctions were a joke. Iraq and afghanistan are worse. Pakistan is worse. Israel doesn't trust us. There is no longer any respect whatsoever in the middle east for the US and we shouldn't waste another dime or drop of blood on this dungheap. And if this directive, like the one to qaddafi, are examples of "smart power" and "leading from behind", we are being eaten alive.
The people of the middle East should be left to fight for themselves. Religion and politics only makes the hostilities between us and they more explosive.
Sun Tzu would not be proud of how we approach warfare for the last 45 years.

Another thing that this shows is the HYPOCRICY of the UN and the ARAB world. When Is defends itself, and everyone knows that some civilians will be killed, there is UN hysteria.

Sorry you've lost me Ban KI-moon has been in strained talks with Assad and now he's come out against Syria's actions. The UN cannot do anything without resolution. China, Russia and India will use their absolute veto on any military action.

We expect the Middle East to resolve their own issues at this point.
