I have found it entertaining that you think that if it were for more efforts to invade peoples privacy that 9/11 would never have happened. You seem to ignore that the real cause of 9/11 was that the Federal Government did not act on good information that it had received about the attack. This had lead to the attacks, not a lack of wiretapping or invasion of privacy.
There are fundamentalists in religion as there are fundamentalists in constitution matters. Both are misguided. Constitutional fundamentalists are for ever trying to get to the ultimate limit of rights, regardless of the reality. Well, majority of us Americans would not worry about how we look to others, we never did. Justice system in France, for example, is doing the same in tearing down French government's efforts to ban Burqa in public. Muslim groups have created a bad name for themselves in siding consistently with world wide terrorism for the last three decades. What is wrong for the US government in taking pro-active precaution to protect its citizens? This is not a question of Repub or Demo administration. Our justice system has overstepped its boundary.
I have no problem with the Government wiretapping conversations between a lawyer and his/her client AFTER they get a search warrant, but not before. I have seen no showing of any type of "immiminent harm" or "exigent circumstances" that the goverment would suffer if they were made to get a warrant first. For the government to simply be able to say "because I say that you are a terrorist, I don't need to comply with the 4th Amendment and get a search warrant first" is simply to do away with the 4th Amendment to the Constitution.
Of course, all of those so-called "constitutionalists" of the right wing ever saw anything wrong with this and denounced anyone who did.
