Correction on Mr. JOHNLOCKESGHOST COMMENT: The British also fought the war on two fronts-in Europe and in Southeast Asia, from India-Burma eastward. And toward the very end of the war, after the US dropped the bomb on Japan, Russia joined in of course, albeit too late but in a land-grab deal.
Russia chewed up the Wehrmacht and spit them out. The world owes them a huge debt.
The Soviets declared war on Japan on August 8th, 1945. Russian special forces dashed southward along the East coast of Asia, to seize as many warm water Pacific ports as they could.
Ahem, can we please stop forgetting Canada? My RCAF vet Dad, about to turn 90 this month, fought in Europe and was headed for the Pacific when VJ-Day arrived. He was far from alone.
At the Yalta conference in 1945, the Soviet Union agreed to enter the war against Japan three months after the defeat of Germany. Germany surrendered May 8, 1945.
President Truman and the senior American military general staff knew the Soviets would enter the war On August 8. That was probably an influence on the decision to use the atomic bomb on August 6 and August 9. If Japan had not capitulated, the Soviets would have undoubtedly occupied a large swath of Japanese territory in an invasion. The Allies had already seen the Soviets gobble up Eastern Europe and likely did not want a repeat in Asia.
Most everyone knows of the military members killed and injured but many know little of the civilian casualties. All in all, a tragedy we as a nation should never forget.
Here is a link to an infographic of the events surrounding Pearl Harbor, as seen through the eyes of Japanese lead aviator, Mitsuo Fuchida. There is a surprising twist at the end that many of us have never heard about: http://www.freedomcelebration.com/pearl-harbor-infographic.html

I was wondering if there would be any notice of Pearl Harbor in the news today considering that the current generation thinks that only they have suffered, that only they have been attacked and that only they have experienced long bouts of unemployment.
Pearl Harbor got us into WWII. Other than Germany, we were the only country to fight on two fronts. The difference being, among other things, that we won our war and Germany lost theirs. It should also be remembered that it only rook us 4 years to do it, while we have been messing around in the middle east for 10 years and haven't accomplished a damn thing.
Do not be discouraged. Prior to Pearl Fifth Column activity was significantly influential; witness the posters of George Washington and Adolph Hitler adorning the stage at Madison Square Garden and heroes the likes of Charles Lindbergh opining that a Germany-controlled Europe was acceptable. Isolationist, anti-war sentiment dominated the thoughts of a huge following, most of whom had turned a blind eye/deaf ear to the carnage in China and the reification of German Jewry. Imagine the despondency of conservatives in that mess. We have been in fustier times and have prevailed. I make an effort to do my part on a daily basis. Victories may be small, but to say they are futile is completely inaccurate. Mighty oaks from small acorns grow.
Not bad...think what he might have done had the GOP tried to help the country rather than making obstruction their primary goal. Of course they failed, as they always seem to.

A new doc about PH on the Military Channel this Sunday.

Don't tell me; it was all George Bush's fault.
