Considering Bush allowed coal fired power plants to continue to pollute without upgrading, which increased Global Warming, Climate Change and extreme weather, it IS Bush's fault!

This is an opportunity for the banking industry to step up and correct some of the wrongs they have done to consumers. There are thousands of foreclosed, vacant properties all across the country. Some of the vacant homes away from the disaster area should be offered to the victims of Sandy free of charge for 90-120 days. The electric, gas and water could be turned on immediately. It's a tax write off for the bank. The families and their children can have guaranteed housing during the upcomimg cold months while the families determine their future. The children could be enrolled in schools and the families would have access to healthcare in their new community. FAS and the Red Cross could provide cots for the homes, while SNAP cards can be issued to the families. The families need time to regroup. You can't do that without shelter and food, and a place to bathe and wash clothes. A website and PSA annoucements provided by the lenders can list the housing available any where in the country. It would be in the best interest of the State and Federal government to move as many people away from the disaster area while reconstruction is under way. Transporation vouchers for Amtrak, bus and airlines to the temporary homes is a lot cheaper than the government paying for hotel rooms. Additionally, closed military bases could provide a long term solution for families that cannot rebuild.

I agree and it is a good idea, but please stop blaming JUST the banks, they are guilty on many fronts. But the government BEFORE Bush was pushing the American dream on the population whether they could afford it or not, Fannie and Freddie were fully aware of what was going on and the banks were pushed by the government on this front as well. The third part to blame are the consumers, at some point in life people also need to take responsibility for their actions as well- when you buy a $300K home with no money down on an ARM and make $50K a year- you deserve what you get sorry. Yes there were predatory loans and the banks are by no means innocent but when its too good to be true it usually is.

The legality of property and ownership would prevent the banks from opening up those forclosed homes for all sorts of numerous reasons, however number one would be liability, if some one happen to stop on a spliter and got MRSA because of it they could sue said bank for not spending more money and cleaning it and making it livable prior to opening up the home.

Like Gov Cuomo said, they are displaced, not disenfranchised. If anything, their vote probably means a lot more to them considering what's at stake.

Considering Romney wants to eliminate FEMA, push it back on the states and privatize it, they have a LOT at stake.

George,

Considering these people are homeless and freezing in the dark, I don't think the politics is number one on their list. Having a president that actually cares, who works with FEMA and the governors is much more important.
