OK, time to ban automatic transmissions! Also put tire spikes as well as "Do Not Enter" signs on all freeway ramps. This stuff is becoming an epidemic. If I ever got that drunk I would be passed out and nowhere near a freeway!

Man does that hit close to home. The little ones are always playing behind parked cars. A lot of us have had those "close calls" and near heart attacks. My sympathy and condolences to all involved. I am so sorry to read this happened.

Maybe they should increase the distance between the gas and brake pedals; make driving with both feet the standard instead of the right foot doing everything.

Actually, I think this would make things worse, not better. Ever been behind a brake-rider before? You never know when they're going to stop because their brake lights are always on.

Which makes me wonder if this woman wasn't a "two-footed" driver and that's exactly why she managed to step on the wrong pedal.

Who accidentally presses on the wrong pedal?

Me! I was pulling into the side entrance of the police station having just completed my driving test when instead of hitting the brake I hit the gas pedal. Fortunately the policeman sitting on the passenger side of the dual-control car was able to hit the brake before we hit the building. Whew! Whew! Whew! I don't know who was more relieved me or the cop. Once again around the nearby city streets and I passed the test. Still I only drove a few times until giving up the keys fifty years ago.

My guess is that poor mother was so stressed out at having to leave her home she didn't know what she was doing. My heart goes out to her, the children and the other parents.

Is it me or are women poor drivers?

All cars require you to have your foot on the brake to take it out of park. So if your foot was already on the brake, how can you put your foot on a different pedal?? And why would you be moving a vehicle with children, including your child outside the vehicle and more importantly, directly behind or in front of it??

Todays people learn to drive automatic transmissioned vehicles and tend to use one foot on the gas and the other foot on the brake.
Those that learn to drive straight geared transmissions never do that because (In the USA) the left foot is never used for "STOPPING" a vehicle, it is only used for the clutch and the right foot either makes the vehicle move faster or stop, (but not both at the same time)!!!!

Ralphing: I believe you are correct as I think they were in front of her and she hit them going forward against the garage wall.

It's such a shame that you all just talk out of your ass, because you don't know the details and don't even bother to find out. I guess its easier to just talk **** about people you think your better then. It just so happened that the children were playing INSIDE THE GARAGE, WITH THE GARAGE DOOR CLOSED!! The lady had no way of seeing them, the children were not playing around, in front of, or behind the her SUV. And if authorities ruled that it was an accident, why are you all so quick to judge what you know nothing about. Maybe you should fallow the news more carefully since you can't hold your tongue.

My sympathy to this poor woman. She made a mistake and her daughter paid with her life. This woman will live with this mistake for the rest of her life.
Most, if not all, of these type of mistakes are caused by distraction for all kinds of reasons, not the placement of the controls. Driver error cannot ever be designed out of a vehicle.
The best that can happen is we all head this story and be a little (maybe a lot) more careful, especially where there are children.

Was she planning to leave the kids there? Why would your one year old and eight year old, along with the other children be standing outside of the vehicle while she is moving the vehicle?

I wonder if she was texting at the same time or wearing stiletto's. How do these people get a driver's license? I can't say that I've ever stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. In my Toyota SUV, they are pretty far apart and the accelerator requires me to extend my leg further in order to reach. Anyway, it's very sad to hear this. I assume she must be totally distraught.

You have to put your foot on the brake before you can take it out of Park.
