It's not really a matter of being gone out of the goodness of the military's heart here. Chemical weapons are impractical in modern warfare. They're deployment depends on independent factors like weather conditions, and their spread patterns are unpredictable. They can mostly be rendered useless against other modern militaries since they have gear to protect themselves from it.
Strongly disagree with your position that CBW has been rendered useless. Anyone who has ever attempted to do even the simplest tasks while wearing MOPP gear can attest to the fact that protective gear severely hampers your ability to function.
How many countries have biological, chemical and nuclear weapons? Does anyone really know? We're all still here thru the grace of God and dumb luck. As unstable countries continue to get the bomb, sooner or later there may be yet one more unthinkable event in our history and in our lifetime.
Unstable? Like Iran, who have proven that, all rhetoric aside, they are QUITE stable when it comes down to it, doing things for rational and reasonable reasons?
We didn't carry atropine, et al, because we had CBW, we carry it beacause the bad guys have them. Until we are sure any potential enemy either does not possess or intend to use CBW I suspect we will contine to carry those agents as well as oour MOPP.

We know that other countries are making and keeping stockpiles of this stuff, so we are as well.
Yeah, REALLY unstable there.... NOT!
No more "Atropine and 2-Pam-Chloride".
