Anti- gay slur costing about a quarter million dollar plus pepper spraying protesters like something out of Nazi Germany. Wow he sounds like a real winner who should be honored. You know, I have never had such an intense negative reaction as the one I had when I watched this video. This stuff doesn't happen in America. It will not be tolerated. The coldness of the officer while pepper spraying is chilling and beyond unacceptable. I hope he is fired and truly hope that some criminal action is taken. There needs to be a strong message that this type of action is in no way acceptable. There needs to be no confusion about that.
another story blown way out of proportion to deflect attention from the crumbling economy, the garguatuan and rapidly growing debt and the failing policies of the current administration. In a non-election cycle, this story would have been five sentences on page 10 of the local paper only.
When you don't comply with police, they use force, not repeat "please" over and over. If the college didn't want law enforcement techniques, they should have dealt with the protest themselves first. Law enforcement aren't babysitters, they have serious life and death jobs, give them a break. Call them when a Registered Sex Offender is raping your child or someone is robbing your house, if it isn't serious, don't bother calling them in.
"pepper spray can be more effective to de-escalate a tense situation" - yeah, that situation looked pretty tense. I bet those wish-they-were-real-cops feared for their lives. But I suppose it's better than having the national guard respond with a firing line.
I'm a 62 year old retired federal nuclear engineer and 14 gallon blood donor and am glad to see the UC Davis students finding what the cops are really like. At the direction of my doctor who told me to lose weight or get diabetes, I started riding a bicycle and walking to put in 1000 calories of activity a day and lost 30 lbs. and saw my sugar level drop from 113 to 85. When I was doing this I had a cop pass me on the road, make a U-turn, put a camera in front of his face and snap my picture. Two weeks later while out walking the cops put a decoy car in my path trying to get me to steal it. Then walking around the park, I saw a senior volunteer duck down behind a truck and figured out he thought I was going to steal something from an open garage door. When they couldn't get me to steal anything, they dropped a bag labeled "Medical" perfectly centered on my driveway and hid a block down the street. When I drove past the senior volunteer whose job it was to watch the bag, he drove down the street, picked up the bag and drove off. I guess they thought I'd look in the bag to see if it might be medical marijuana. When I explained to my doctor that the cops were harassing me when I was going out to exercise, he called me "Paranoid" without so much as letting me finish the harassment. Since that time, I rode my bike past a domestic disturbance and heard a plainclothes cop yell out "There's a bicycle rider." 5 blocks later, I had my picture taken a second time. Then a cop while I was out walking let me walk out to the middle on the crosswalk, before he pulled across the street in front of me as if to say "I am God". The fine in town for driving into a crosswalk with a pedestrian in it is over $200. But he is the law. Then I was riding my bicycle again and a cop passed me up, and made a U-turn. I said to myself "This is how this whole stupid thing started." I'm not going to let that ***** take my picture again and made a right turn. He made a left to follow me. I rode past the brother of the Oklahoma Thunder's coaches house and said out loud "This idiot riding behind me thinks I'm a criminal." He then headed off in the direction of the nearest donut shop. Also during this time, the Minister of Propoganda for the local police department had an article printed in the local paper saying "If you see bicycler riders in you area, call the cops." I kid you not. That's in print. Then a second article after I complained in the local paper about being harassed said "There are a lot of SOBS (Scum on bicycles) in Manteca, a phrase coined by the local police department. I sure am not paranoid, the cops are paranoid and totally classless. It's good to see the UC Davis students see what the cops are really like, a bunch of bums with badges, not the heroes that the local paper describes them as.
I'm an American living in the UK. During the summer, while visiting my family in the States (they live in an affluent neighborhood with no sidewalks, just long expansive lawns) my kids and I decided to take a walk. Two or three streets from my parents house we were approached by two officers in a car. They demanded to know who we were, why were we walking, where are we going....They had never seen walkers before?
" a 2006 incident when he decided against using pepper spray against a patient in the campus hospital who was threatening his colleagues with scissors." Maybe the patient voted Republican. Ex marine sergeants are rarely Democrat.
I consider myself to be one of the "occupiers," though I have not had nearly as much time to spend in tents protesting as some others have. However, I W-2'ed over $900k last year; and my wife, a surgeon, made $263k on top of that. Are we the lazy, dirty hippies you speak of? Because I am quite certain that I paid more in federal income taxes that last FIVE YEARS combined, then you made in income the last ten years composite.
As I read these degenerate and prejudiced viewpoints on this CBS News forum, I cannot but help to see why America is in the position it is of disparately polarized factions, constantly at odds with one another. It saddens me to no end to see how this has degenerated so much over all of these years.
Its called democracy.....troubling sometimes, but necessary. BTW, congratulations on your financial success. I support your right to protest, and have an opinion diametrically opposite of mine. I do NOT support your right to block roads, sidewalks, poop in public, camp where no camping is allowed ,trash parks or campuses.
