Comments on: Police Seeking Record Aid to Avoid Layoffs
President Obama Set Aside $1B for Police Help, More Than $8B Requested
- Lay them off that will be 40,000 less functionaries. And I hope they lay off the thugs they seem to hire.

- Watch these guys just up the fines for speeding and bust people for 1 mph over. This is actually a good time to get rid of all the bad cops, but I'll bet they do it by seniority instead.
Man, it's gotta suck being an ex-cop and not being able to hide behind the uniform. I would guess a lot of scores will be settled. - Reply to this comment
- No more bailouts for any reason. If cities can't afford the services that are currently provided, including police, then it's time for reduction in hours worked, layoffs or terminations. Frankly, I don't have an overwhelming desire for my tax dollars going to some other city to pay for their services. Let them make the necessary adjustments at the local level.

- The drop in crime in the 90's was due to the increased penalties. 80% of crimes are committed by a small number of criminals. When you put those people in jail for a longer time they aren't able to be out there, committing more crimes. Thats why laws like "3 strikes and your out" work.
I don't cry any tears about reduced police coverage. In my city I mostly see cops deployed along the freeway pulling people over for speeding tickets. In the meantime, identity theft is at an all-time-high. I'd be much more willing to spend my taxes on more police if they were busy putting identity thieves in prison and quit pulling traffic all day long. - Reply to this comment

- Good. Lay them off.
We need to stop enforcing laws against victimless crimes like prostitution and marijuana use. The only reason we have them is to perpetuate our burgeoning police state.
Less cops, less criminals, less prisons, less crime. - Reply to this comment
- The California town I live in with a population of around 50,000 has a police chief with a pension of $145,000. Is is any wonder the cities in California are going broke. We don't need more taxes or more money, we need better management of the resources we have now.

- California is broke because of what the republican lawmakers in that state have done and have'nt done. Republicans governors are deliberately sabotaging Obamas recovery attempts so that he will fail. Are republicans some sick people or what? They care about party more than country. What a bunch of jerks!
- NY has the same problem. There have been stories on how they pad their overtime to increase their pensions. Many officers on Long Island make more then $100,000 a year in overtime. The union rules are what is causing these inflated salaries and the only way to correct the problem is to deny the next contract and start getting comsessions. Consessions that are not given back later on. It is time for them to retire at 65 not when they have completed 20 years. Long Island communities, it was reported, owe over $100,000,000.00 (one hundred million)a year for benefits to the retirees. The public employees need to pay toward pensions and healthcare - the people who pay these overly generous benefits are tired of it.
- States, Counties and Cities are standing in line with their hands out like beggers on dead pan row. It is time someone told those enities to make some hard choices.

- Mayors and city councils are often as irresponsible with money as they come.
Spend every cent of revenue they can get their hands on to gain political favor. No reserves whatsoever.
Great management that is.... - Reply to this comment

- All police departments could collectively save millions on end if they would just stop the practice of letting officers take the patrol cars home. The cost in extra fuel and the wear and tear on these PUBLICLY owned vehicles would decrease considerably especially since most officers use the vehicles for personal errands when on or off duty.
