Comments on: GM Factory Towns Confront A Bleak Future
Suppliers, Local Businesses, Charities - As Well As Laid Off Workers - Affected By Plant Closings
- A factory job is not a right. A company is not an institution. Companies have gone in and out of business since the beginning of companies. If this one is supposed to go, let it go. Another one will take its place. And if it doesn't, well, maybe there were too many of them in the first place. It's sad, it's heartbreaking, but that's our system.
Obama has a plan to help GM get through this. It may work, but then again it may become a noble but failed experiment. I hope for the former. But I'm practical about the latter. Britain and France have both been down this road, after all.
I say we try to let the patient recover. But if it becomes obvious it can only live on life support, we should do the merciful thing and pull the plug.
I wish GM and Pres. Obama the very best of luck. - Reply to this comment
- Well, now the super rich that are using slave labor in third world countries might find themselves in a real perdictament. They're going to need to share and pay real wages to somebody so there can be consumers to buy their products. That's what is causing this whole mess in the first place, the love of money. People who have more then 50 generations of their family could ever spend study demographics and pay their employees just enough to survive. Either share or their going to surround their grandchildren with a large peasant population.

- It so sad and funny to see all the desperate posters trying to change the subject by talking about Bush. to hope we forget about Obama is a big huge failure.

Yeah, you almost had me there until you said "Obama push you off a tall building..."
Bush had eight years to mess up the country; you really are delusional if you think Obama or anyone else can fix it in a little over four months.
Once again: What is the republican approval rating right now? Down around 24%?
Hang in there, oiaf17; it has to get better for you. Just hang in there... - Reply to this comment
- WHAT!!??
The makers of the screaming '65 396 Dodge Hemi-in-the-
-rear-view-mirror Vette,,,,BANKRUPT,,!!??

Then,,,the bastarrds started to make the corvettes look pretty,
I dont know what the '62 vette would bring now,,,,
,,,probably a McMansion.
It was a motorcycle with two wheels,,,dont remember it's

- When people need to use GPS devices to get home from work, do you take guidance from those same people. America is full of morons

You are right! Some of my conservative friends use GPS devices in their huge SUVs when driving to work or to the car dealer to get their vehicle serviced.
In spite of most of them having high-paying jobs, I guess they are morons, too. - Reply to this comment

More fear-mongering, I'm sure. Only someone delusional would think that Obama has a "plan," as you describe. Maybe "many" of you believe that, but nearly twice as many don't believe it.
On the other hand, where were you when King George tried to curb your Constitutional rights?
Where were you when he declared war on a country that did not attack us?
Where were you when King George spent billions and billions of the taxpayers' money on his personal war with Saddam? And his war, and its cost, still rages on.
Of course Americans, your children and grandchildren, will be paying for King George's "war policy" for many many years.
Besides, GM, Chrysler, and Ford didn't fall on their arse in the past 120 days; part of it had to start when Bush gave huge tax breaks for people to buy huge vehicles. - Reply to this comment
- All republican thoughts, policies, lies and mismanagment, from social, environmental to fiscal, have been rejected outright by the American electorate. Last report there were only 23 % of Americans supporting the Repubs, so they are a minority indeed. If judging these posts is any guage, one can easily see why they have been rejected.

- Blame the last eight years of Sheer Republican Incompetence and Lies for the current economic woes facing America. Bush rejected CAFE standard upgrades many times...yet the foreign competition kept improving their's....sort of like keeping one's car maintained at optimal operating levels and the Republican's decided not to change the oil.

- GM...?
Didn't they hone the art of "planned obsolescense?
In the '50s didn't they build cars that literally fell apart so they could sell more?
Well, it looks like they inadvertently planned their own obsolescense.
Didn't GM and Chrysler, during WWII, switch on a moments notice, from building cars and trucks to building military equipment for the war effort? And they did that with 1940s technology.
American vehicles are dinosaurs. Why can't GM and Chrysler and Ford switch to a new technology and build things that are needed in the 21st century? Like mass transit? Why don't they put their plants and workers to productive use.
They could if they could only get their heads out of the sand. But a taxpayer bailout is much easier...too easy. - Reply to this comment

- Millions of people who have RV's have a Saturn because they are so light weight and easy to pull. We morn the loss of a great little company. We havea 1997 Saturn that runs great and get's 33mpg. We don't need to buy a Chinese car that Obama will be pushing us to buy later this year when China imports it's Chinese car that is being made south of California in Mexico. Even one of the Ford models is being made in Mexico. We would never buy a car made by the Chinese. The Chinese government want to take over our country and our stupid politicans have let them. Many of the plants that make products, used to make their products in American, then they shipped them overseas and jobs along with it. American's, stop buying foreign goods...Buy American. Buy American. Be an American, buy American goods. With the closing of many of the GM auto plants, a Depression is just over the hill...soon all of us will pay the price for the greed of the CEO's and the corrupt, greedy politicans. Obama: How are Americans going to buy a home when you don't have a job and the only home you have to live in is your foreign car.?

we weren't overpaying true American workers, you like to malign and call 'unskilled', we were paying over-educated idiots like you for taking our car loans and turning into ever more and more worthless credit-default swaps and sticking them into people's retirement funds for your stupid college boys on Wall street. - Reply to this comment
