About kids on drugs??? seriously? i personally would prefer to not have my kids hanging out at the local party store when they're 14 (when they're supposed to be at ballet, golf or football)waiting for a buyer to go inside and purchase drugs for them as opposed to being where they're supposed to be and in their right state of mind for their teammates.

No, the issue I had was not about kids on drugs. I agree with you. I don't want kids smoking pot OR drinking.

The issue I have is your statement that you can monitor a drink, but once you call it a "drug", then katie bar the door. That implies that you can monitor a drink, and that all drugs have similar effects.

Good point - unfortunately, once our money is in the gov's hands, we have no say as to where it gets distributed - so even if it was ever legalized, monitored and taxed, it'd probably go for more welfare.

I agree.

Are there really people out there who hate pot?
Seriously?
What decade are you living in?

sbbm: medicare or medicaid are not government funded? i am not speaking of programs that specifically treat abusers of illegal drugs or legal drugs, or junk food.

regarding the "less toxic" comment, i look at it in a number of ways

1. I am not aware of any marijuana overdoses. People die from alcohol poisoning every day.

2. I have looked at the net quite a bit for the results of long term studies of marijuana users, and all I have found portray it as "much ado about nothing". Is it healthy to put smoke in your lungs? Likely not. There are more ways of taking it than smoking it. Is it any more dangerous than tobacco or alcohol? I don't see it.

3. It seems that there is a correlation between alcohol and violence that does not exist with pot.

i do agree it is like welfare in that we all pay for it.

sbbm: i didn't void my point. i don't want to pay for people who abuse themselves in one manner any more than they want to pay for my "abuse". However, I do feel mine is less dangerous, but that is another discussion. The point is that once we pay the taxes, how do we determine what to cover?

sbbm: well, it appears that we agree on more than i thought. i agree that it is the irresponsiblity that is the issue, not the use. and, i am not one of those who feel it is good public policy to legalize everything. i do take issue with your last statement:

"but once you take a drug, there's no monitoring it, really, it just takes it's course."

How do you "monitor" a drink, or a "drug"?

Your statement also appears to imply that all drugs are the same.

There are drugs that, once you take them, you should be in for the night. But, dummies will try to drive on them. Alcohol is one of them. Most of my friends have DUIs. I don't have one or want one. When I am driving, my limit is 1. The last ticket I got was about 10 years ago (50 in a 35 (needed to get home to pee))

I want marijuana to have the same legal status as alcohol. I have not heard any rational reasons why it shouldn't be.

But, as long as you are civil (something often lacking on these forums), I have no problem discussing stuff with you.

I still ask why should the taxpayer pay for someones excessive indulgence to the point of becoming addicted?
Posted by sbbm-2009

And I still ask if you can state that no taxpayer funds are spent for the health care of drinkes, smokers or the obese?

sbbm: we've already "opened the door" for drunks. why not allow people a legal, less toxic alternative to booze?

sbbm: i eat right, don't drink alcohol to any extent (about a case of beer a year), and am a gym rat. why should i pay for the health costs of those who choose to abuse themselves?
