Those who say marriage was about property are the ones who have studied history. In fact, that is why priests could not marry. The church did not want their property to go to a spouse upon death, but remain in the hands of the church.

For those of you saying same-sex unions are okay, just so we don't "denigrate" the term marriage, I'll remind you of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision more than 50 years ago: separate is NOT equal. Unless a marriage is a marriage is a marriage, you're setting up a second-class status for gays and lesbians. I know that's how many of you prefer it, but the time for that is running out. You're on the wrong side of history.

God bless you, Vermont! We love you, even down here in the South.

Once again a piece of history is mis-stated in a veil attempt to prove a point. Seperate but not equal was true in education - but providing exact rights in exact ways just under a different heading is MUCH different. You make it sound like the use of the term marriage somehow blinds people to the fact that the individuals are same sex - it will remain obvious for the world to see - naming it the same thing doesn't change that.
Marriage is a term that should only be used when it fully fits a situation - when it is used in the religious sense, same sex marriages don't apply.

Good job Vermont! You are one of the first states to rise above the discrimination of good people. 30 years from now, you will be hailed as one of the states with the courage to stand up and do the right thing. You will be hailed as a state that led the way to equality for all. You will be hailed right along with the states that broke down the racial divide back in the 1960's, and the gender divide before that. You are indeed the star of our country today!

Fear not, for those people of questionable mental stability will call you names, throw insults at you, and even threaten violence against you, but they will not prevail. Good always triumphs over evil, and, even though it will take time, those who decry your recognition of equal rights for all will go away, just like the Ku Klux Klan did. Army Of Good, celebrate this fine day, but, brace yourselves, for evil still lives among us, and a long, hard road lies ahead before the day when the evil discriminators are completely gone. Abominations remain in our midst, and they are the Anti-Gays.

Throughout history, marriage's most improtant purpose was to manage property rights. In America's own (European) heritage, marriage was mainly a business agreement between families, with arranged marriages. Throughout most of history, marriage had little to do with reproduction and certainly had nothing to do with love.
