Uh, just to be fair on this one, check out the crime reports. A HUGE portion of the gun crime in the UK is commited with fake guns. I looked into it after a comment like yours.

Yet there was another case in Miami today where a homeowner used his shotgun to dissuade a thief trying to break into his home. He might be dead, with his family, if he had not had a handgun. Also look at the statistics in England. They banned all guns in private hands. What happened? The bad guys all have them and gun crime went way up. So did knofe crime so they banned them too.
If is wasn't a gun it would be a knife or a bomb or a car or something. People determined to kill will find a way. Things don't kill people -PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE!

They also decrease the chance of someone entering your home, murdering you or your family, etc. Of course proper use.
