I think that this is a very bad idea for the government to impose on its citizens. The fact that "The system would require all cars and trucks be equipped with global satellite positioning technology, a transponder, a clock and other equipment"... makes me wonder if the miles driven and therefore the amount due by the driver would be the only thing downloaded by our government. It has a TRACKING DEVISE... which said clearly in this article would allow the government to know what roads we drive on. That is a scary thing to think about. Even if they say that they would not impose on our privacy rights like that, IT IS A GOVERNMENT! I love this country and i think that a federal government is completely necessary but power corrupts and there is no such thing as a perfect government. People with that kind of power are likely to abuse it. Look at the many countries throughout history and still today, who have the power to impose on it's citizens rights and ask yourself if allowing your government to impose in a way they shouldn't is a good idea. So even if the government wouldn't be able to see where we are whenever they wanted, it opens a gateway to possibly allow the government to impose on those privacy rights. I just think that it is a bad idea and I think that a good solution would be to stop spending so much federal money. The reason our country is in such bad debt is because of excessice spending. (Not saying that the stimulus bill is a huge part of that, just because I don't know enough about it and the outcomes of the act to give an educated opinion.) But how about the federal government reevaluate its budget and fit the gap of funds for the roads into it. So in closing, I think that this VMT tax idea has too many risks involved to ever be put into effect by state or federal government.
OMG Big Brother is clamping down on the American taxpayer by leaps and bounds. I don't want anybody in the government watching where I drive to and from everyday. This is BAD!
Before one penny of new US tax or increased US tax is proposed lets get US citizen value for money on hard earned, mandated by law US tax cash already harvested by our elected government from law abiding, tax paying US citizens.
America first! Stop trillions of US tax dollars handed out in overseas and foreign aid.
Our tax bucks must stop here and stay here!
We the people in order to form a better nation; must not continue to arrogantly or self righteously espouse or even falsely believe our US tax money is generated to solve the woes of the world.
Plenty of tax already pulled in at local, state, and national level yet quality of government service and return for our money is going down.
Heaping more US tax on a foul smelling dung heap of mismanagement or poor priorities is a no go.
Tax payers are always investing in America; we have no choice.
Our leaders must give US a much better good return for our current tax rather than cleverly develop new ways to force more change out of our pockets.

As far as the VMT is concerned, just who do they think is going to pay to have this equipment installed? I'm not. I will NOT have that equipment installed in my autos. Period.
We need : ////////1. REDUCE the % charges on CREDIT CARDS to 9%. ///2. Build 20 NEW NUCLEAR POWER STATIONS for really cheap and continuous energy........
/////////3.... Mandate dual energy CARS - ELECTRICITY and HYBRID only , unless commercial and long haul trucks by 2020.

Really? As I recall things looked pretty good When Clinton gave the keys to the White House to Bush.
I'll be the first to say that the Democrats could support the common person better than they do and that lobbyists have too much influence in both parties. What I won't do is tar them with the same brush as the unapologetic Republicans who are all about getting more for their supporters in business and the wealthy class. If you can't see that then you must be brainwashed by Lou Dobbs.
As long as brainwashed party supporters "Stay the course" of believing all the BS BOTH parties spew out daily.....'We the people " will NEVER be represented by EITHER party,,,,,do you FOOLS not see this?....BOTH parties are the DEATH of the middle class,,,people better wake up soon and see this ..or you will find yourself in the middle of a revolution.
