Its all wrong. Doing the crime is wrong but charging teens as sex affenders is just as bad. Also what the heck were the teachers doing looking through the students phones. EVER HERD OF THE 4TH AMMENDMENT!!!!

I believe that, yes,"sexting," is wrong but i believe that charging these teens with child pornography is a huge over reaction. These kids are going through changes, there hormones are raging and changing every minute. They can't decide if something is appropriate or not yet. Dont emprison silly, stupid, hormone crazed teens. They aren't sex affenders, there children. It's natural for humans to wonder what the oposite sex looks like. Don't ruin there lives for sending a picture. We were all curious at on time.

I feel that it is silly to have legal consequences for teens engaging in normal behavior. Child pornography laws are developed to prosecute pediphiles. Teen interest in sex among each other is healthy. While I don't believe that sexting is a good option for the exploration of budding sexuality, and I am concerned that young girls seem to be doing most of the posing, I don't think that treating these kids like criminals is very effective. They do not seem to be deviants. I am more concerned with all the violent fighting that teens are recording and posting on utube!

Okay, I, too, am 16 years old, going on 17 in a couple of months. First, I'd like to say that, no, it does not hurt anybody or anything to send a nude or semi-nude photo of oneself to another. It does no physical harm and can cause teenage "drama" at the most. Secondly, PLEASE take a look at the article above. I want you to take into account that, while the students' cell phone is against student policy, it is also against, technically, the 4th amendment. That cell phone should have been confiscated, yes, but to look through the phone without reasonable cause is a violation of privacy, and if there were more then that picture, such as personal information, such as, perhaps, diseases that the student contracted, anything about his/her family life, etc., he/she could be affected by emotional suffering and anguish caused by stress. The same goes for the story of the coach. Nothing, and I repeat, nothing GAVE them the right to search through the content of the phone. If you look through all the teachers phones, computers, etc., I'm sure we'd find more then a fair share of explicit content. A teacher at my school store a gun is his desk in class. Another has had sex with a student, which is bad enough, but the teacher was engaged at the time of the act. Teens are teens. Adults are adults. Let it stay that way. I heard that it is advised to start teaching children about sex at age 10? Don't quote, because I'm not entirely sure, but that enrages me. Even us teens know that is, not only is this not necessary, but it's ridiculously asinine. There are bad teens, but you need to trust us. Not imprison us for something like a picture. Too much money and time and effort is being spent on the smallest impurities when it could be put to better use and REALLY make a difference. Stop CRIMINALS, not lovers. Find JUSTICE, put your foot down on petty thieves, purse-snatchers, bank-robbers, anybody who COMMITS A CRIME, not an innocent teen.

Vermont gets it, do you? Sexting may be tasteless and juvenile, but it shouldn't be illegal. http://www.thechildinjurylawyer.com/

This says that 20% of teens engage in "sexting" and they face criminal charges, I see comments defending this..."So what can you do, just arrest 20% of the teenage population." Sure you can, think about all the people that smoke marijuana that are arrested on tiny charges, oh wait nobody wants to, drugs are such and evil thing in USA and now sex, Kids are going to be kids, why attempt to destroy their lives before they are even mature enough to make their own choices effectively, smoking a little weed or sending a naked picture to you gf/bf should not be enough to screw you life over permanently. This country is getting ridiculous, imprisoning the people that work to make life possible, I do roofing and 3 of the people I work with have been arrested for marijuana, that doesnt effect the quality of our work what they do on their own time, sometimes I think our government would like to watch me urinate, oh wait they do like to by drug testing everyone that gets in an ounce of trouble. Growing up in the 70s and living through carefree times and proudly supporting our country throughout Vietnam Im appalled at where this country is now, taking away every possible right and taxing heavily on anything. Lets charge 9 dollars a pack for cigarettes for no reason and screw over every person that got hooked on smoking when the government supported smoking because it was a great source of revenue which it still is but it seems like US government loves to backstab its residents. - Don

If child Pornography is the law then yes teens should be held accountable for their actions and the laws should be applied just as it would be for adults!!! They have to abide by the law just like everyone else!!! So if the law states jail time and having to be a registered sex offender? Then if the shoe fits Put it on!!!

Wow can you say over reaction? I mean seriously, they're teenagers. They experiment, and that is not all wrong. I'm not saying that it is a good thing, but it's their own business. If a girl wants to send a nude picture of herself to her boyfriend, that's her choice. However, what I don't want to hear is people complaining about their pictures being sent around to other people, because it's your own fault if you trust the wrong person. In my opinion, let the kids have some freedom, because it doesn't matter, they'll do it anyway. Anyone with teenage kids will agree with that.
