Stalinism (The state becomes god) = stagnation.

Stalin was an atheist, communism is atheism.

You are thinking in black and white again jowand. If the state becomes god, it is Dogma. If you believe science without question, it is Dogma. DOGMA IS BAD JOWDAND, any way you slice it. This state of things is leads to stagnation.

The Apollo program gave us TEFLON - and now we find out that it does rub off and it gets into our bodies - and stays there. In all seriousness - how was going to the moon productive? And if it was productive, how much more could have been accomplished if all that money was spent elsewhere?

And to the person who mentioned the Interstate Highway system - it gave us urban sprawl, burned up our energy supplies, created much more air pollution (and global warming?), destroyed our cities, killed public transit as a profitable private enterprise, just about killed the railroads, and helped de-personalize our society. Sounds pretty productive to me.

I agree on all points. We were discussing government programs that equated to "success" or proof of government working. Arguing ultimately what constitutes success is a whole other thread.

I can give you plenty of examples where the church has stagnated progress. You are going to have a hell of a time finding examples of it progressing society. It is authoritarian in nature, anathema to progress, unquestionable and unchanging. Theocracies = stagnation, Stalinism (The state becomes god) = stagnation.

Isaac Newton wrote more on religion than physics

Fannie and Freddie were run by crooks at the management level. You getting off topic and hysterical again.

Look, if they had not been privatized, where would the incentive been to steel via liar loans?

To Fahrenheit 451

I studied creationism in school and I became a physics teacher - how else would I know who Tesla (and Faraday,
Roebling, Sprague, etc.) is? Was that gramatically correct?

No, they started as government projects and were later privatized. Putting all you faith in the market is as ignorant as putting all your faith in the government, Dogma is Dogma.

Just as Fanney and Freddy imploded as soon as they were deregulated and psuedo-privatized.

What have Republicans done anything on this front? Teaching Creationism in school would not have inspired Tesla.

Neither has teaching evolution.

You need to holster your tongue and read the post what Donnie made, everything you have just mentioned came out of th eprivate sector.
Donnie was talking about technical innovation from the government. The Apollo program was the last one!

So you are admitting the government has done something that works. Look out, you may be opening your eyes. It is all in who is controlling the money.

How about public works, the modern highway system, modern phone and electrical, damns, so on and so forth. You need to perform some serious cognitive dissonance to convince yourself the government can do nothing right.

A question for William 257 -

Which of the following were government employees?
Westinghouse, Tesla, Einstein, Fulton, Ford, Wright (Orville or Wilbur), Roebling, Sprague, Bell, Carnegie, Edwin Drake, Morse, Kaiser, Schwinn, Faraday, Charles Martin Hall, Gould, Morgan, Durant, etc.

And another question - give me a list of government employees who were as innovative, inventive, or productive.

Now tell me again how productive big government is.

Posted by swin5 at 01:15 AM : Jan 09, 2009

It is all in how the money is spent.

From what you are all saying, we should be focusing on education. And most certainly agree.

What have Republicans done anything on this front? Teaching Creationism in school would not have inspired Tesla.

The government can be the prime motivator of innovation and new technologies.
