It''s really amazing that nobody was killed in this crash.

My hat is off to all the first responders and rescue crews.

Job well done.

"All airports have mechanics to refuel, and to fix the ones that cant make it to south america.
Yes, its because of the greedy republican corporate monekeys. Theres no getting around that."

sock,
My friend Mark does not refuel the planes.
He works on all of the systems in the planes, up to replacing entire engines.

You are as clueless as Barney Frank.

The key thing here is professional pilots aborted take off, the equally professional flight attendants got the passengers off the plane and I do not see any fatalities listed. There are 5 flight attendants did a great job getting everyone off quickly.

We should be thanking them, not criticizing.

Umm, the pilots were doing their job, AND they were also saving their own azzes, the act was not out of the kindness of their hearts- they were on that plane TOO! even if it was just them and cargo they would have done the same thing.

A few seconds more and they''d have been in the air and likely couldn''t have recovered, the news today would be plane crash, 200 dead.

Couple of videos of engine explosion tests;

youtube.com/watch?v=y2OS2pwrZTI

And one showing what happens on takeoff to an engine if a bird gets sucked into the engine- camera caught the bird going in, plane was able to circle and land ok... THIS time;

"The care of our passengers, crew and family members is our highest priority and they will receive any assistance necessary," said Larry Kellner, Continental Airlines'' chairman and chief executive officer.

"We are deeply concerned by this accident and will do everything we can for the passengers, their families and our co-workers."

Yeah RIGHT! they care about as much as how high the insurance will go now- cheaper for them to skip maintenance because if you get killed or are injured the INSURANCE pays not the airline.

"US Aviation travel is incredibly safe!!
boatdocster"

Except for when it''s YOUR plane whose roof or engine falls off, or whose pilot decides to suicide today due to financial and girlfriend troubles- with you strapped in, or like those two pilots yakking away on takeoff not noticing the runway they were on was WRONG, too short, had no lights and they crashed into the trees at the other end.

Air travel might be safer per mile, but engine failure, fuel tank explosion, fire at 20,000 ft you are dead, engine failure on the highway means you have to get a tow truck but at least you are alive.

i''''m a Liberal - and I wish you''''d shut up. Good job to the Continental crew, best wishes with the entire planeload of passengers and crew. Thank goodness no fatalities. All of you who want to make this political...get a freaking life.

thankfully, there were no fatalities - Merry Christmas

The flight attendants were the first off the plane behind the cockpit crew, they all escaped the fire without injury. The people in first class tripped each other up trying to get past the coach class. That is when the injuries occurred. The Jewish Christmas decorations flared up in the fire, apparently the decorations were quite old and had no fire retardants applied. AIG insurance is calling for UL labels to be on all Jewish Christmas decorations now or the materials will not be allowed on planes.

I don''t think it would be cost effective to fly all airplanes to South America for maintenance. With the cost of fuel, pilots to fly them, etc... it''s still cheaper to maintain them here.

Maybe he meant South Dakota?

"With greedy republican laws they are now able to fly all planes to South America for all maintenance. In south america they have slave labor performing the maintenance."
Posted by sockpuppet4

Ya, sock, it''s all the Republican''s fault! They''ve made ALLLLL the laws in this country since 1865.

BTW, I have a friend who does aircraft maintenance at DIA/Stapleton and has been there for over 25 years, and I don''t think he''s ever been to South America.

"We went off into what felt like a little bit of a rough patch, took a little bump up, took flight for a few moments, hit the ground again, bumped again, then the engine on what was the right side of the plane seemed to just blow up. The plane came to a pretty abrupt halt and people got out pretty quickly. We all piled out through the emergency doors and ran up the nearby hill."
That was a quote from one of the passengers and it sounds like this might have been a turbine failure. Spinning at up to 30000 RPM''s, they have an incredible stress placed on them. When one of them goes "poof", particularly at takeoff power, the results can be spectacular. The passenger is fortunate the engine didn''t shred shrapnel throughout the entire right side of the plane. It could have and in past incidents of similar nature, some of them did.
I second boatdocster''s praise of the pilots and crew; they did an exemplary job. One that not too many of us could have. Likewise for the firefighters who had to deal with the mess in less than ideal weather.
OTOH, turbines do not fail for no reason. There is usually a long period of fatigue that builds up and is easily detectable by diagnostic tools that can examine micro cracks and changes in the metallic structure of the turbine. Someone, somewhere should have caught this. It is fortunate that the engine decided to fail on the ground. It could have waited until the airliner was at 35000 feet and then we would have read about a tragically different outcome.

I travel a lot (130,000 plus flight miles per year for last 10 years), have Platinum or equal flight status on multiple carriers but Continental is my preferred airline (Platinum with them for over 5 years). I know most of their pilots, ground staff and attendants and I''d get on a Continental Plane today without any hesitation. US Aviation travel is incredibly safe!!

Jet turbine engines, while appearing simple, are very complex, run almost 24/7 at high temperature and mechanical loads and despite excellent US quality and maintenance do some times fail. Just like some car engines or fuel lines sometimes fail and catch on fire - I''ll bet most of us would still go out and buy a car.

The key thing here is professional pilots aborted take off, the equally professional flight attendants got the passengers off the plane and I do not see any fatalities listed. There are 5 flight attendants did a great job getting everyone off quickly.

Two FAA incidents yesterday involving certified pssgr carriers. Albany and Denver. Both Continental. Even prior to this I would never allow myself or any family members to use this carrier. Way too many accidents, fatal or not.

Stemmle:

Did the flight attendents help?
Or were they among the injured?
There is no mention of who helped who.

Credit should also be given to the flight attendants who got everyone out safely.
