U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald said he was dismayed to find that so many law enforcement officers had "sold out their badge."

Well, they better keep going. The majority of cops are liars, cheats, and crooks. It''s one of the best jobs to have to get away with crime. I don''t know if you people ever went to www.badcopnews.com before they took it down. Every day there were pages and pages of news on crooked cops being charged. These were just the cops who were so blatant and greedy they had to be prosecuted, and still the police unions were standing behind these child rapists, murderers, etc.. You''d think they would be happy they were getting bad of the bad element within, instead they were fighting for them.

Police Officers are held to a higher standard, to serve the public. Wherever there are humans involved there will be corruption. This is why, you screen. The higher the position of public trust, the more intensive the screen. Officers who are "dirty" usually will eventually get caught. When they do, a review of every arrest that they have ever made, resulting in a conviction should be conducted.

On a good note though, the level of corruption among police officers is probably but a fraction compared to society as a whole.

To pw08: Yeah, like providing armed guard service to drug dealers. And I like your stupid little suggestion that cops become cops because they want to help others. I like that little fantasy world you live in. They "gladly" do it for the low pay? You must be a stock broker. One of those ignorant rich people who think everyone lives exactly the way they want to. Don''t be so naieve. Even ignorant stock brokers should be smart enough to understand that you get what you pay for. You pay on the cheap, you get corruption. That simple. So don''t be so suprised or get all high and mighty when it happens.

I am very glad the gringos are getting off their self-righteous high-and-mighty arses and finally recognising that there is CORRUPTION in the "world''s greatest country". The drug-addicted Americans MUST have corrupt agents in Police, FBI and other agencies, otherwise, the horrible narcocriminals we have in Mixico wouldn''t be able to trade their rubbish with such ease. Hope Obama wakes up and stops selling guns to Mexican crooks, and that finally, gringos wake and smell the coffee: drug addiction is big time up there, and not just amongst the poor. Good work, Feds!!

Cops who break the law have way more rights than the average citizen. It should be the other way around.

"tnz650...Exactly how much do you think they are worth?"
Posted by tomanyt at 10:47 AM : Dec 03, 2008

I''ll answer that. A good cop; a really good cop who understands his(her) role is more about crime prevention than enforcement after the fact is priceless.
A good cop is someone who follows the spirit and letter of the law scrupulously, even it it means failing to catch a suspect or failing to gain a conviction. A really good cop will find a way to catch out those suspects ethically and legally.
A good cop will conduct himself in a rigorously honest fashion, will follow procedure yet be creative when the circumstances call for it, and will enforce the law with complete impartiality.

They aren''t as rare as we might think given the - deserved - bad publicity and they are worth far more money than we generally pay them.
But....The Bobby Cutts and Drew Petersons of the law enforcement world are far more common than the ones we wish to reward and cherish. These folk would be a bad bargain even if they worked for free. And the culture of corruption that pervades police agencies clear up to the FBI drives many a good cop out of the service altogether.

So because the cops are underpaid its ok for them to be an escort service for drug dealers? Chit I''m broke can I rob a bank without worry of the police?

Cops are rats. The worst acting and largest organized street gang in the world.

Now that they are behind bars they are still corrupt due to the stupid laws that have been put forth. Just imagine that served 3 square meals a day, a roof over your head and STILL DRAWING YOUR PAYCHECK while sitting on your duff. Most people in jail don''t get paid unless you work there.

Subsitute the word booze for drugs and this headline is unchanged from the ''30s. Why anyone would trust someone from the world of Chicago and Cook County politics is beyond me. Oh wait...

Many of the surrounding suburbs have excellent, first rate police depts.
These guys were from Harvey & Cook County, both entities hire based on family ties.
Every major position is based on patronage.
Lower pay does not excuse these guys for what they did.
If they could make nore money doing something else, they would be doing it.
This is the result of hiring by who you know.

tnz650,

If pay is the issue, maybe you shouldn''t become a cop...maybe you should get more education and become a stock broker. Maybe some cops become cops because they want to help others and not themselves and gladly do it for the low pay you mention. Stop whining about the low pay because many of them more than make it up in the benefits they receive that other jobs don''t provide.

Corrupt police officers will continue to be a problem until they are paid for what they do. A man can sit behind a desk, look at a computer screen all day and make over a hundred thousand dollars a year. A police officer risks his life every day protecting everybody else and is lucky if he can make 50 to 75k a year. You want to get rid of corruption and bad cops? Then pay them what they''''re worth. They''''re worth allot more than some computer geek or stock broker. And the bozo''''s who''''ve run the banks into the ground and ruined the nations economy will still wind up with ten''''s (if not hundreds) of millions of dollars. You wonder why police are corrupt? Going forward from this economic mess, why would anyone not be?

When it comes to your word against a police officer, the judge will always ask, "..would this officer lie?" I''d say yes he would if it meant saving face in court.

This goes hand in hand with police officers never getting covicted in poor judgement shootings. Everyone always assumes that police are honest, stable people. Heaven forbid you exercise your rights. Our justice system is no longer just. Innocent if you can afford it. The D.A. in the Duke rape case is a prime example. It would be great if he were the exception rather than the norm. Abolish plea bargins and enact true sentenceing laws everywhere!

Illinois and Chicago are disgustingly corrupt places; try dealing with the illinois tollway authority. A 6,000 dollar fine escalated from a $72 dollar fine...of which I was never notified.

I will NEVER live there again.
