S.C. School Says Culture Rather Than Biblical Teachings Led To Institutional Racist Policies
- Fact: BJU does not receive any federal funding, and in fact is taxed by the feds. So the decision to issue the apology had nothing to do with that. As an alumnus of BJU before 2000, I can say that African-Americans and Whites etc. always got along just fine. My literary society had an African-American chaplain (all offices in societies had to be approved by the university)and race relations were excellent. I personally had friends at school who did not like the ban on interracial dating, but they still loved the school, and continued to choose to go there. I challenge anyone to point to a more loving and accepting place than BJU. Their work in the community is well known in Greenville to this day. I personally worked to reach minority children in poor areas of Greenville with the gospel. please don''t think this apology is a political move. As best I can tell, it is an attempt to turn the page and not have anything stand in the way of the gospel which is the power of God unto salvation to EVERYONE who believes.

- "In a statement posted Thursday on its Web site, the fundamentalist Christian school founded in 1927 in northwestern South Carolina says its rules on race were shaped by culture instead of the Bible."

When will they admit that the biblical stories are steeped in past culture?
Yet to be a fundamentalist, they believe that every word is concretely literal. That is, until it is more convenient for it to be figurative. Especially figurative when it comes to Ecclesiastes. - Reply to this comment

I personally know that they used plenty of Bible passages to support this ban over the years. They now day it was not biblically based, but that is only in hindsight.
They won''t, of course, look at their other policies to see how they are based. - Reply to this comment
- Count me totally unimpressed.

- Don''t be reckless in your comments. Jesus was a Jew, and as such would not be considered a terrorist in today''s world.

- Basically, the liar''s argument was that because of Obama''s tax plan, he didn''t want to make over 21,000 a month. Yeah, right. If I could make 21,000 a month, the least I would be complaining about is my taxes. But I make far, far less than 21,000 a month and I still get nearly a quarter of it taken out in taxes. So Mr. Joe duh Plumber, shut up, because I doubt that you know how to pay taxes at all.

- No! Really? Fundamentalist Christians being racists??? Say it isn''t so!!! Only rev. Wright is the racist, although he never said anything against white people who aren''t racists. How could you fundamentalists sit in those churches all those years and not get up and leave??? How is this possible??? The reality is you liked it. And racism is just one more reason to leave the fundamentalists thumpers in the dust of disgust.

- Very Commendable. They were wrong, they admitted it, they apologized. More of this in the world and we might get rid of racism.

Naw...this will do no good until people are willing to accept the apologies and move on. I have seen almost nothing positive about this effort by someone to correct wrongs done by others in the past. Instead I hear people insulting the man who gave the apology and looking for anything they can grab hold of within the apology to tear him down.
Until people are willing to ask forgiveness and those asked are willing to give, racism will continue blindly forward.

On an aside...I really don''t think the gay and lesbian community should be trying to use this as part of their own battle cry. apples and oranges. - Reply to this comment
- kansas1946: Joe the Plumber is significant because he was a mere mortal who challenged the Messiah. His life and private government records were illegally made public. If something like this had happened to a terrorist, the ACLU et al would have ran to his aid.

"Challenged?" He didn''t even ask an intellegent question. He said some goofy thing about buying a plumbing business for 250,000 which confused Obama as it should have. Number one, Joe couldn''t put together $250 to buy anything, let alone 250,000, so that was a lie, and then what does buying a business have to do with anything. We own a small business probably worth 250,000, but we certainly don''t take that out in income.
As far as you criticizing Obama, if you voted for Bush in 2004, then you have no credibility when it comes to judgement. If we have to choose between Bush and Obama for a "messiah" it is no contest. - Reply to this comment

PERHAPS...But I really believe if the student had the following it would not be such an issue:
1. MONEY - MONEY - MONEY and more MONEY! Takes a lot of cash to go to these universities!
2. Determination! The student must have the drive to want to go to such schools.
3. GOOD GRADES! The student must excel at academics or a be a great sports rising star or simply one the smartest to get scholarships!
4. BLACKS and other minorities have MORE MONEY than they EVER had in history! From the Sports/Cinema/Music Stars to the business elites and huge middle-class with degrees, these people now know what must be done and so their children are enrolled in higher learning. This is not the 1950s.
5. MORE MONEY!
Yes, universities are feeling the pinch but not that much because students and adults are running back to school to get more degrees to become more competitive in this dire job market! Why do you think school tuitions continue to go up, not down or even stay even year after year? - Reply to this comment
- ONLY "ONE" COMMENT TO BE SAID ON THIS ONE:
I can understand the "Racist" policies from 1968 downwards (meaning dates previous to 1968)
BUT HOW DO YOU REPENT THE YEAR: 2000 (21st Century)
BAN ON INTERRACIAL MARRIAGES? The Year 2000?
This university is a DISGRACE! Only NOW they have the nerve to come out with this nonsense. Why? A black president, federal funds (religious based funding) or lack of students? You take your pick!
If someone came to my office seaking a job from this university and universities of this type, I would find it very hard to feel compelled to hire them.
REMEMBER: RACIST POLICY IN THE YEAR 2000! 8 short years ago!
A UTTER DISGRACE!!! - Reply to this comment
- I give credit where it is due. It''s not easy to apologize.

- Joe the plumber, who was not a plumber but a want a be apprentice, reminds me of a "skin head", not surprising, since he sports their classic hair cut, is a republican who donated $100 to campaign, but could not or would not pay his taxes, never made enough money to buy this one man owned, two man operation plumbing business, one thing consistent the republicans have destroyed themselves with their racism, and it is funny karmic justice, we now hear the elite in republican party blaming Sarah Palin, Laura "jilted for a democrat" Ingram radio host, right wing nut, Sean "fake common man/multi-millionare" Hannity, Bill Oreilly, Rush "addict" Limbaugh, for the debacle and defeat of the republican party in 2008, and 2006, and if one wishes to really see a nut job, visit Neil Boortz''s web site, where he posts himself as "Mightey Whitey", advocates education tests for right to vote, guess he and his ilk missed the memo decades ago when US supreme court struck down the Jim Crow education test laws!
