For those who don''t know Kitty Genovese was a 28 year old woman stabbed to death in Kew Gardens queens. It was a famous case because newspapers at the time (1964) reported there were 38 witnesses who saw the crime from their windows and heard her scream for help, but nobody called police until she was already dead. Actually, it came out later that was mostly inaccurate. While she was first approached by the killer in view of the apartment windows, where she was stabbed was out of sight of most of them. There''s in an interesting article about the case here:

- A twenty one year old mother ran into her ex-boyfriend in a bar.ok what is she doing in a bar in new york ? Living in queens pretty much tells us the income level so the odds are she was on hud and or welfare and the child has health ins. paid by the tax payers. So she supports her local bartender on tax packers momey by proxy or directly with what cash she earns.WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME,DOING THE WRONG THING WITH THE WRONG PEOPLE. WHAT A RECIPE FOR DISASTER!

- It''s a surprise anyone bothered to call the police at all ... a woman screaming in NYC is as common as car alarms going off.

- I once called the Hollywood police when a burglar was ransacking the house next door. The police arrived, caught the intruder, then beought him to our front door to ask "Is this the guy you called us about?"
Of course he was out the next day, and my guests, visiting from Holland, cut short their stay, afeaid that the criminal was loose, and knew the faces of those who called the cops on him.
It is not inconceivable that those who did not call were concerned that the police often bring more problems than they solve. - Reply to this comment
- I have neighbors calling the police because another neighbor looked crossed eyed at them. Then that neighbor calls the police on the other neighbor for something stupid. And history repeats itself over and over again. I have one neighbor who says he''s going to put a picnic table out front and leave a dozen donuts on it. The police are called to his house so often.
