To tell you the truth, I don''t think there is much that can be done. It''s too late.
I looked after my sister-in-laws kids for awhile when they were teenagers. They were used to going out whenever they wanted and staying out to all hours of the night. I found that once you have lost control of them, it is really hard, if not impossible, to haul them back in.
I didn''t have problems with my kids, because from early on there was consequences for their actions.
People don''t like to hear the word "control", but that is exactly the way it is. If you lose control of your kid, there''s no going back. If my kids were bad, they had their most favorite thing to do or have, taken away from them. My one daughter loved to talk on the phone and that was the first thing that was taken away. And it wasn''t just for an hour!
From what I am seeing with parents today, they do not discipline their kids. They don''t even know where they are, never mind what they are doing. If you don''t start when they are young, there isn''t much hope. - Reply to this comment

- There''s a saying ye can lead yer horse to a watering hole and yer horse will or will not drink the water.
Parents they can send their kid to school but with out the tools to aid can''t learn and if abous in the home that child shuts down and is in fear. Some can''t do their numbers, some have a learning handicap.
I wish people would think before they ever have children. I am not a parent. All the safe guards won''t work, Ye can''t cram the mind with things it can''t grash, I wanted to learn the basics were missing, from early on. I would love them to have schooling as we pay for it. - Reply to this comment
- I am 53. It may surprise ye I was barred from school from 5 to 10. I was denied that. And when I did attend at 10 I could not read ,write, spell, print my name. I went in to sp ed and was the only legally blind child. No large print or sp needs, so who failed me.. the state..I was money to the homes and that it. Teachers saying Barbara I can''t teach ye. So I sat in class as that was the law. So kids can''t get it mo matter how it taught. I don''t have an answer, the home is the blame, as parents dump the handicapped on the town, They in turn can''t help.

- Congratulations sbbm, you have some smart kids. And you%u2019re a good parent to see after them, teach them, encourage them. Somehow don%u2019t see them wearing ankle-gear ;-)

- So you''''re saying it''''s OK that these people learn to become lazy and let society (the likes of you, myself and the rest who oblige) to take care of just because they ''''don''''t want to''''?
(btw, you are awesome to debate with - have to say it''''s refreshing and appreciated)

Thanks for the compliment.
Is it Ok for these people to chose to be lazy? More appropriately, I would ask, is it Ok to deny them their right to chose? And I say it is not. I don%u2019t much care for lazy people either. But I would not try to force someone else to be otherwise if he chose to be lazy. Nor would I kill him to dodge the bill.
These represent the only three possibilities: force him, kill him, ignore him. - Reply to this comment
- Also, society getting %u201Cstuck with the bill%u201D is not sufficient grounds to toss free will out the window. Society chose (again, a choice) to dole out public assistance.

- I failed high-school algebra. That was actually somewhat unusual for me, as I tended to do well in most classes. But in this case, the teacher was so boring, I doubt Preludes would have kept me awake. In other words, the class could not hold my interest. So I did not learn it.
A couple of years ago, I needed to learn some trigonometry for my work. Thank god for the Internet. Through it, I taught myself what I needed to know (couldn%u2019t afford any kind of continuing education course at the college).
The point is, if someone is going to learn, then he will learn. It%u2019s a choice. If he is not going to learn, then he won%u2019t; also a choice.
Stand back and let evolution do its job. Someone has to wash dishes. And it is *always* a matter of choice, as it should be. - Reply to this comment
