It will be interesting to hear the details that led up to this tragedy, if they are ever made public.

Was the shooter the victim of a bully who was tormented to a point that he could no longer tolerate the abuse?

Was the victim guilty only of some minor or imagined disrespect to the shooter for which he paid with his life?

The story implies there was an ongoing conflict. The only fact known at the moment is that the conclusion to the conflict came with the violent death of one student at the hand of the other.

With this dearth of information, it is premature to suggest either cause or cure.

What laws were broken by this student?

Minor in possession of a handgun
Minor in possession of handgun ammunition
Minor in possession of a concealed weapon
Possession of a firearm on school grounds
Possession of ammunition on school grounds
Brandishing a weapon
Discharging a weapon on school grounds
Assault with a deadly weapon
Murder or manslaughter

The NRA, GOP and all sane Americans urge and support the prosecution and punishment of criminals who commit these types of crimes. We already have enough laws on the books to accomplish this. New restrictive laws will not prevent this type of crime, and will likely only create new victims from the law abiding citizens who obey them.

Have there? What sort of tragedy would it take for you to post them?

Great idea!!!! How????
By usclimey

How ''bout a quick background check? Medications, mental problems, something like that. Isn''t there a required license to own a gun? I mean by an official ''gun license'' proves you ARE the responsible citezen who would be the only victims of complete banning of guns.

Here''s a thought, an empty gun is a paper weight, its bullets that kill.

and I''''m not trying to spar, we''''ve had awesome debates over a lot of issues and I''''ve always held your views in high regard

Nope, I know you''re not yanking my chain.

Well,, when you are talking about drugs, I think if they never outlawed pot, we''d be in much better shape. But because they have created a situation that people are willing to try "other" drugs that are way more harmful than weed. The thinking goes,,well if it''s all illegal, why not go for the "good" stuff?
Which is a mis-nomer, because the "good" stuff really is the most dangerous, and the most harmful.

But weed,,well, you smoke it, get the munchies, and take a nap. Sounds awful doesn''t it?

Like I said, prohibition of anything does not work.
And for every law that we pass, will and does have unintentional consequences. Another fact of life! And very true as well.

I don''t know what the answer is to gun violence.

BTW, it''s the shooters fault, no one else! Owning a gun doesn''t put someone in a magic trance that causes you to go kill someone. He was well parented, don''t blame the parents here! If he was parented REALLY badly, then it could happen, instability in his life/bad morals and all. This shooting was not "a random act" so it had purpose, maybe not a smart one, but it did. This means he was slowly, or quickly destabilizing. I think I have successfully shut down all flamers regarding this story...

Here are gun-related deaths per 100,000 people in the world''''s 36 richest countries in 1994:

Interesting numbers. I''ve seen those figures before; South Africa was actually #1 at 74.6. I also find it hard to believe that Mauritius is one of the world''s 36 richest countries! There have to be more up to date data on this since 1994.

Don''''t ban guns, just restrict guns from people who have the serious possibility to SNAP.

Where did the kid get his parenting?

Posted by payasyougo

Did you miss gramto8''''s entire post??? He just said he worked with the mother and by all accounts from co-workers to friends she was an excellent parent - his point as I read and agree with, was that sometimes no matter how good the parent is, the kid is a monster.
----
And you missed my point entirely. She was at work, not parenting.

Well if the kid was being bullied it certainly does give the other kid motive. Alot of these so called "random" shootings are not so random. If this kid was some kind of problem child already and this other kid was bullying him...kaboom. I realize there is no legal excuse to blast someone for bullying but I can understand it.

How does owning a gun give you the urge to go kill someone? My family owns several guns of different powers, and guess what? No one has died! The people who go on shootings are the ones who aren''t right in the head. Don''t ban guns, just restrict guns from people who have the serious possibility to SNAP.

These are good for re-heating only! Name one food that you can cook in a micro-wave? Save maybe vegetables, and that''''s about it.

The shooter''''''''s mom worked with me at our local hospital. She was one of the best nurses we had, and from all everyone who knew her outside of work could tell, was an excellent mom. Her other kids were very good students, very well behaved. This child was the child from hell. Nothing mom did could get through to him. He was all of 13 when he shot his classmate.

it''''s a catch 22 - you can''''t save the individual from themselves if they''''re intent on getting something to cause harm, they''''ll get it because there will always be someone in the market to sell it to them.

Posted by sbbm at 02:47 PM : Aug 21, 2008

No sbbm, it''s not a catch 22 situation. It''s very simple, you make something illegal, only the criminals will control it. Doesn''t matter what it is.

Any prohibition simply does not work!!

And that''s a proven fact!
