Yet it was meaningless *** and I was not in Love. It was wrong and it took years to rebuild my marriage to the level of trust we now enjoy.

I feel that guilt even now years later and my wife and I have a great relationship and she forgave me and allowed me back into her heart but it was dificult to rebuild the trust just because of my infidelity.

What Edwards did would be unconscionable if his wife were healthy - her illness amplifies the horror. She is more forgiving than most people, apparently. She is the only sympathetic party in this whole miserable scenario.
