The Astorian also quoted Eric Krask (retired Delta pilot) as saying the ceiling at the Astoria airport was 300 feet that morning. They also reported that there was no flight plan filed at the Seaside airport, which is a requirement for instrument flying. Several of the dead children were grandchildren of one of Oregon''s former AG''s so there will be quite a microscope put on this. There is also speculation that Jason might not have properly drained water from the aircraft''s tanks during the preflight check as it''s tricky to do on that model.
With all due respect for the dead, it looks to me lkike overconfidence by an experienced pilot in a hurry to get somewhere. I am very familiar with this as I also engage in a risky activity - riding a street motorcycle - and I''ve done so for many years. I am oh, so very, very familiar with the temptation to jump on the bike and get going when I''m running late. Lots of bikers have died over the years doing that. Looks like lots of small plane pilots have too.
My condolences to the families involved, not just the ones killed by the crash itself, but as well to the children of Jason who are now without a father. I cannot imagine a more horrible accident for the families to deal with.

I am frequently out in Seaside on business and I know how foggy it can get in the early morning. Yes, there is a lot more to this story than what has been reported by CBS. kmtr.com has an interview with Roy Bennett who served with Jason on the Seaside airport advisory board. In it Roy discounts instrument failure due to meticulous maintainence by the owner of the plane, Aviation Adventures. This is also coorborated by the Astorian at www.dailyastorian.info which reported that this plane was the only one owned by AA. (so you can see why they took care of it) Roy also mentions that Jason has 2 or 3 children.

GOP_forever''s comments read like another troll''s: ''soccermom'', on another news board. Some people just don''t have enough things to do to keep busy.

This is a sad tragedy for everyone involved, and my sincerest condolences to all.

It''s equally as sad that there are so many trolls on these boards who get on and post outrageous things just to get a rise out of others. There are entire online communities comprised of these losers devoted to making a game out of getting on boards like these and gain points by seeing how many times they can get a rise out of someone else who may be 2000 miles away. These friendless, pasty-faced, screen zombies are so pathetic that they actually worship the most extreme anarchists among them. There''s a story in the New York Times about it.

DaVicar2 does have a point. 100 adults could lose their lives, with one child, and the news sources would publish one picture of that one child, worldwide. Of course that''s what they want, something extra to pull at the heart strings to get more readers.

Don''t get me wrong, its a tragedy for anyone to die because of some freak accident, or natural disaster, esp a child. But at the same time, don''t diminish the adults lives that were lost in the process either. Just think of all the children that are affected when 100 parents die in these calamities, it could be staggering!

I also just signed up because of the comment GOP-forever made. He will find out when his time comes. What goes around comes around! Again my heart and prayers goes out to those families. I know what it means to lose a love one like that.

GOP-forever is a troll that posts outrageous statements to get people suckered into being enraged so they respond with anger. He changes his name every few months because after awhile people recognize what he''s doing & learn to ignor him (anyone remember GOP soccermom?). I''m still surprised go for the stink bait and it''s ""FISH ON""

There is always one in the crowd that has to make a statement to show just how much of a fool he is. Yes there is a "God" whether you believe in Him or not. My heart goes out to these people! They are in my prayers.
