Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.

Yet, as I said, th impetus of this from the Dandury Baptists made it clear, Government''s duty was only Civil. Putting religion into Government, by Default, makes it a religious institution.

Pingon: Unless you are in a gay relationship or are a woman, then I do not see how that type of ''''hideous'''' behavior affects you personally. I understand your feelings and schools teaching alternative lifestyles is something I am not aware of. Onn the ohter hand, many so-called upstanding young women were getting abortion in alleys, some were raped and some were too ill to deliver a child. Some real tough calls, wouldn''''t you say.

It doesn''t affect him.

The Evangelical Screech is: We don''t like something so nobody should be able to do it! We want to control YOUR lives because we can''t control Ours!

wah, wah, wah!

Sticking scissors in a baby''''s skull and sucking his brains out before he exits the birth canal is a barbaric procedure.

It is the dems who are meddling in my life by redefining marriage and eventually wanting to force schools to teach alternative life styles.

What a crock of craaap.

Translation: I don''t like it so nobody else should be able to do it!

Explain exactly how the lives of two gay people will affect your marriage or life.

Again, crock of self-righteous craaap.

AND religion should not interefere with Government. He was, in effect, supporting religios rights by isolating Government FROM THEM.

It appears to me that he''s only keeping the state out of religion -- I don''t see any mention of keeping religion out of gov''t:

Funny. I see. Polls are unreliable. So how do you know dems are going to win in a landslide? You must be a prophet. I do not like to meddle in anyones life. It is the dems who are meddling in my life by redefining marriage and eventually wanting to force schools to teach alternative life styles. I do not think abortion is an issue of privacy but of murder. Sticking scissors in a baby''s skull and sucking his brains out before he exits the birth canal is a barbaric procedure. If you think this is fine what can I tell you. One day you will stand before God to give an account. One votes for the lesser of two evils. You apparently have fallen for the Democrats messiah. What does he bring to the table? Change!! This so called chaged is just old recycled 70s elitist garbage coupled with socialist style distribution of wealth. I can''t wait for Obama to be president.

Some Interesting excerpts from the Danbury Baptist Letter to Jefferson:

Our sentiments are uniformly on the side of religious liberty--that religion is at all times and places a matter between God and individuals--that no man ought to suffer in name, person, or effects on account of his religious opinions--that the legitimate power of civil government extends no further than to punish the man who works ill to his neighbors; But, sir, our constitution of government is not specific.
-------

In other word, they believed Government should ONLY deal with civil matters and the religion was between God and an individual.

A Wall of Separation between Church Matters and Satte Matters.

Scientists are on the brink of being able to predict earthquakes by measuring seismic velocities in fault rock. I wonder how that plays into Gods apparent (according to the fundies) plan of punishing perfectly innocent people (including children) for the "sins" of gay people?

Maybe God has no such plan, but instead helps those who help themselves.

I say ''maybe'' cuz I still got some uncertainty left (unlike the fundies). I''ve heard uncertainty is the mother of humility, something Christians used to approve of.

How the hell did a story about an earthquake, which are common in, and indeed FORMED California, turn into a theological discussion? Fires and earthquakes have been crucial elements in this part of the world since long before man arrived here.

Following the sick and twisted "logic" in this discussion, you could just as well say god caused the earthquake in anger about yet another Republican being indicted.

People, if your god is that vengeful and angry (i.e. the one in the Old Testament), maybe you should seek a new deity.

Religion and Politics do not mix.

John, I don''t disagree with you. My only intent was to clarify the Separation of Church and state issue as it was proposed by Jefferson. Even though I am a Christian, I don''t always agree with the ''Christian Right''.

Xyno, the whole impetus for the "wall of Separation" came from a letter from the Danbury Baptists who were complianing that the Connecticut State Legislature considered religious not an "immutable right" but rather a privilege granted by the State. Jefferson never adddressed the issue at the State level - which is proper for a Fredeal level person - but rather clarified that the State should not interefer with religion AND religion should not interefere with Government. He was, in effect, supporting religios rights by isolating Government FROM THEM.

Jeff
erson''s ''Separation of Church and State'' came from a speech and was never part of the Constitution.

We were discussing the original intent, not the recent distortions of it.
