That''''s not quite correct since they are independent events. Like flipping a coin where the odds are that every other flip will be a head, but it doesn''''t mean that you can''''t flip 5 heads in a row.

Actually, that''s not true. Earthquakes and afterschocks are closely related events and governed by newtonian mechanics driven tecto-volcanic forces. In general, aftershocks are lower in magnitude because stresses have already been released.
