Ok, this is pure speculation - nothing at all to back it up. Pure speculation.
Since Reagan, I have had this little suspicion that the reason Republicans have run up such huge deficits (it seems to be so outta character, on the surface) is to give themselves ammunition to attack the "entitlement" programs that they so dearly hate. They can use the "entitlement" programs as excuses for the the deficits they keep running up. But, like I said, it''s just speculation.

In light of this disastrous financial news, the next U.S. President, no matter who it is, should be given 2 terms, 8 years in office. The first term should be used to get the United States financial house back in order and the second term should be to realize the new Presidents agenda. This may sound a little on the extreme side but our financial house is that out of order, in that bad a shape thanks to fiscally responsible Republicans! All Democrats really need to do is focus on the Republican mismanagement of the U.S. Treasury to the tune of a $9 trillion National Deficit and a $482 billion dollar Budget Deficit and Republicans should go hide their fiscally irresponsible faces! It`s really hard to believe Republicans allowed this financial nightmare.

C''mon folks, quick complaining about the fiscal irresponsibility of Bush and the Repugs. At least the richest 1% received a hefty tax cut!! What? None of you are among the wealthiest 1%?

The republicans used to say they were fiscal conservatives. They don''t even bother to say that anymore, because, of course, everyone would simply laugh in their faces.

Now the republican party is just about hating minorities and promoting your religion. The moral crusaders have run up a debt so large that it will take generations of pain to fix it.

"The result: the biggest deficit ever in terms of dollars, though several were higher in the 1980s and early 1990s as a percentage of the overall economy"

Like I post below, that''s nonsense. The real GDP has hardly risen since 1980, if you factor out the pure crapola, the unecessary real estate trades, the loans being sold and resold by the same 3 guys, etc. The overall real economy per capita is not growing, its been shrinking for years. The only "growth" in it at all is due to explosive population growth, the 40 million illegals that have flooded into the country since 1980. That''s almost a 20% growth in population, and real GDP has grown less than 20% in the same period.

It is a huge lie to claim that these current deficits have any historical precedent, other than idiot and ruined nations in the failure column of history. This is an insane debt by an insane government. It is completely impossible to pay off this debt without crippling the US economy and parlyzing the gevernment for 100 years. Run the numbers. This debt is a suicidal burden, we are way past the point of failure and collapse. it would take a severe restriction on every American for some 50 years, a life of drudgery and poverty with little or no government services and even higher taxes, to even begin to pay off these debts.

"The deficit numbers for 2008 and 2009 represent about 3 percent of the size of the economy, which is the measure seen as most relevant by economists."

This kin dof measure, to compare debtsd against GDP, only makes sense if your measure of GDP measures genuine productive activity. We have had a phonier and phonier GDP measure every year. It includes activities that are mere derivatives, such as financial institution activity where they move the same non-money around in a million ways to churn their business model but which has no actual goods or services or tangible productive actions associated with. This GDP is vastly inflated, and thus the deficit as portion of GDP is vastly, hugely, underestimated.

Thus we plunge headlong towards financial ruin with the dumbest Congressmen and government officals this side of Zimbabwe. A dumb people with a dumb government will not prosper. America is not only dumb, it worships and idolizes stupidity. The result is inevitable ruin.

WASHINGTON %u2014 The government''s budget deficit will surge past a half-trillion dollars next year, according to gloomy new estimates, a record flood of red ink that promises to force the winner of the presidential race to dramatically alter his economic agenda.

The deficit will hit $482 billion in the 2009 budget year that will be inherited by Democrat Barack Obama or Republican John McCain, the White House estimated Monday. That figure is sure to rise after adding the tens of billions of dollars in additional Iraq war funding it doesn''t include, and the total could be higher yet if the economy fails to recover as the administration predicts.

The result: the biggest deficit ever in terms of dollars, though several were higher in the 1980s and early 1990s as a percentage of the overall economy.

The 2002 performance marked the first budget deficit after four consecutive years of budget surpluses.

Both were quite a distraction from US policy.

"The deficit numbers for 2008 and 2009 represent about 3 percent of the size of the economy, which is the measure seen as most relevant by economists. By that measure, the 2008 and 2009 deficits would be smaller than the deficits of the 1980s and early 1990s, ** when Congress and earlier administrations cobbled together politically painful deficit-reduction packages. ** "

Clearly since then they have not made that mistake again.
