With congress being at a big whopping well deserved 9%,
they should be the ones who get the 70 cents increase
which is well deserved for these MORONS. What a disgrace
these idiots in congress are giving themselves a large
raise a few months ago. Those are our pigs feeding at
the trough.....Vote them ALL out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you mean like Obama''''s proposed indentured servitude for high school kids under the the term ''''mandatory public service''''. The concern over minimum wage is not adults making minimum wage but rather the number of youths (under 21) who are unemployed. That number has skyrocketed since the increases began. They are the lowest trained lest experienced and are the first to be fired/not hired as businesses look at their staff. How are these youths supposed to get experience if they can''''t get a job. Additionally, these youth are more likely to then be involved in greater mischief and crime than they would had they been employed. UC Irvine has found that a 10% increase in minimum wage results in an 8.5% drop in employment for low/unskilled workers under 24.

...........................

This bunk for the weak minded gets rehashed everytime the minimum wage gets raised and neaver happens. Low wage unskilled workers are in such great demand now that the US is supporting half of Mexico through illegals and I dont know of any of them making minimum wage.

The purpose of the minimum wage was to ensure that people could afford the basic necessities during a Great Depression economy. Contemporary Republicans have morphed this into some sort of benchmark for poverty, implying that it''s intended to be a motivator for personal development, which isn''t true. While most businesses will not be affected by a minimum wage increase, the lower-end sectors will. I see this a being a negative thing in the current economic climate, with many businesses struggling to stay afloat. The increase will have no effect on the betterment of it''s intended recipients if there''s no jobs.

"The minimum wage levels should be automatic. Every year the cost of living should be calculated along with what it takes for a family of four to live above the poverty line. Whatever that poverty line is, the minimum wage should be three percent above it, providing a forty hour work week"

They tried this in the Soviet Union....Didn''t work

hk94 - Be careful. Logic and/or the implication of personal responsibility have no place on this board.

How can anyone live on $6.55 per hour? That''s like $262.00 per week and that''s before taxes. As for that poor (literally) guy in Nashville, the article said "family of seven" not "seven children". God help him!

Any ADULT earning minimum wage needs to go to the nearest tattoo shack and have a BIG "L" put on his/her forehead.

And Gov. Arnold Schwartzenegger just lowered the minimum wage in the higher costing State of California.

Just another example folks, that Republicans believe in serfdom and slavery.

If you want McCain then you will have full employment; I mean serfdom.

.................

Typical Repub, some poor slob gets a few extra pennys a day for working a cra**y job and they get livid, let the rich get bail outs in billions and thier ok. No were in the article did it say anyone blamed America, the family they support were thier children or Jasper was complaining. People who work these jobs despite low pay, no benifits and bad conditions really deserve more than minimum wage and perhaps a little respect.

I enlisted in the Air Force in 1962 right after graduating from high school. The beginning package then was room and board and 70.00 per month. I survived. When I got out in 1966 I got a job at 1.20 per hour. I had more disposable income in 1966 then I did in 1968 when I entered college. My wife and I worked hard and saved so we are doing OK now although our savings are not earning much and social security is being eaten by inflation. We had things set up so we could combine interest earnings with social security and maintain a modest but comfortable lifestyle. But with taxes and insurance going up and the cost of food and gas and utilities we are having to cut back even more to keep from having to go into our savings. So much for planning and hard work. They say hindsight is always 20/20. I guess we should have planned better.
