I agree with so many varibles causing our youth to "grow up" what would you expect. I wonder if these girls stopped yet to realize that they are now "stuck" for lack of a better term for the next 18 years. And because history has a really bad habit of repeating itself there is a very strong chance that at least a small handful of these girls will become grandmothers by the time they are 40. Thats sad. heres another fun thought. ten year reunion those kids will be in 4th grade. Imagine getting that high school diploma as little jr. spews up that formula. theres'' a picture for the yearbook

Folks,
I am shocked that Americans are shocked about this.

With so many divorces and so many living together without marriage, why would anyone care about these ideas from high school girls? Where are the examples to wait until the right man comes around?

Today, if you do not have s*e*x by the end of your 8th grade in middle high school, you are consider a loser by your peers. Birth Control makes it even more easy to have s*e*x instead of studying hard for a career.

With so many high-profile movie stars such as Madonna just having babies as super mothers (no dad around) or singles, not surprised about so many copycats.

The Institution and traditions of Marriage is DEAD! American perform the must convenience/easy/quick/cheap ideas at the heat of the moment. Unfortunately, this idea is the only sure thing Americans export around the world - Patented and Made in USA!

OK, so there was no pact. That explains why the school gives pregnancy tests and has a day care center, it was just business as usual.

To all you anti-abortion, right-to-lifers: Congratulations! These girls have taken your pro-life propaganda to heart. You should be proud of them.

So it isn''t coincidence, it''s a miracle?

Just because a bunch of stupid teenagers didn''t sign some pact, discuss it with all their school officials, have it notarized, and then file a copy with the town clerk does not mean this wasn''t planned. Yes, 17 girls pregnant simutaneously at ONE school must be some sort of freak phenomenon. Uh huh. Pulease. Life must be seriously boring up there in Gloucester if these girls have nothing better to do than to get pregnant to fill some void left by a LACK OF PARENTING! 17 teenage, unwed mothers who probably aren''t even sure who the fathers are. The Roman catholic church must be so proud. But at least they didn''t use birth control. (insert gag noises here.)

First, I think the girls themselves would know more about whether or not a pact was made between them than the school administrators, the school counselor(s), or the girls'' parents!

If they say there was a pact, than there WAS a pact!

Second, vnveteran72 has a point---off topic---but STILL a damnn accurate point! CBS---as well as the rest of the mass media---has been damnn silent about the Congressional steamrolling of the legislative act of the dissolution of the Constitution!

The shredding of the Constitution is more important than Amy Winehouses'' health problems---among other less important stories!

There was a story posted about that. But hey, in the day of glamorizing the Spears sister having a baby at 17...could there be a more fitting article?

I''m telling you - the world is going to start being like the 50''s and 60''s - all women are going to start having babies when they are 16 again. That''s how it should be - then your body can bounce back to life right after...and every woman has a maternal instinct...so why not start early??

Hope your parents have money!

I''m sure it was the clam chowder...or possibly the lobster rolls. Seriously, Gloucester strikes me as the kind of place where people are probably desperate to break the monotony. Guess maybe a few have found it.

Yes, if you look at celebrity magazines, more and more are getting pregnant. BUT THEY ARE ALL ADULTS!!!! I read TIME magazine I read about people picking up guns and killing people but I don''t run out and do it. The fact that the town is heavily Roman Catholic is enough information. Their followers are kept in a perpetual state of guilt and denial about contraceptives. It''s pushing the 3rd world to the brink of disaster and it''s starting in this country now as well. Common sense, if you''re going to have ***, protect yourself. If you''re not married, or prepared to financial, emotionally and physically support having a child. (too late for the parents of these teens, but not too late for the other teens yet to discover how babies are made.)

The heavily Roman Catholic town - the neocons failed their "abstinence class." 17 girs pregnant simultaneously... I am sure those teens would not admit it to their own parents and especially to the mayor -

What a cop-out! I already heard on the news how a father of one of the teens explained the pact that his daughter heard.

Just because the kids don''t trumpet or sign sworn statements of their shameful pact is no excuse for this mayor to stick his head in the sand.

Or maybe he thinks it''s normal behavior for sophomores to give high-fives when the pregnancy tests are positive, and to look disappointed if they are negative?

His denial is ridiculous, not credible, shameful, and does nothing to prevent similar pacts in the future.

Why should he extend energy and effort to solve a problem he could more easily deny? Fool.

Four times the pregnancy rate! If it looks like a dog and barks like a dog, chances are it''''s a dog. But, according to the major it could be a horse. "plausibly deny ability" and spin the by words of politicians.
