Benjamin Rush -- A signer of the Declaration of independence and founder of five Universities, three of which are still in use today, Ist Proffesor of chemistry in the U.S. In 1791 He wrote a paper "The defence of the use of the Bible as a school book" He wrote 12 reasons not to take the Bible out of school but at the end of the paper he wrote "If we were to remove the Bible from pulic schools we would be waisting so much time punishing crimes and taking so little pains to prevent them."

Woodrow Wilson -- "The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country."

This will never be about legislating morality or religion. This is not a legal issue....it is and will always be a moral issue....and issue of right and wrong.....good or evil.....holy and unholy. The founding fathers had such a spiritual foundation in their own lives they realized that the laws and morals of our country would be governed by the moral conscience of the people at large. This means the moral compass or conscience of our country is in a process of decline and those who are discerning realize there is a price to pay.

Governments and constitutions are not above God and our founding fathers knew this in their hearts and warned us to keep the priority straight and we haven''t. This is not a legal matter.....it is a moral conscience which is at stake.

always love how those who oppose gay marriage based on the bible are so willing to turn a blind eye to divorce (a sin that Jesus actually said he opposed, unlike homosexuality), eating lobster, wearing mixed cloth clothes, and other biblical sins that they don''''t wish to give up. Homosexuals are the favored excuse - you look at them, call them sinners, try to ban and persecute them, so you can ignore all the other biblical injunctions that you might someday want to violate.

And I just love how those who oppose the bible so much,use it so readily to sanctify their wickedness.
Being a christian does not mean we are sinless, it does mean however that we have been forgiven our sins by the grace of God through Jesus Christ his son. As a freed prisoner(christians) we only want to tell all how they too can be freed from the prison of slavery to sin. Being concerned for the well being of our neighbor and country, we are by ethics, compelled to warn those who are on the wrong road of the dangers ahead. The choice is up to you and so are the consequences if you choose to ignore the warnings.

Treaty of Tripoli: "As the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion; ..."

The preliminary treaty began with a signing on 4 November, 1796 (the end of George Washington''s last term as president). Barlow forwarded the treaty to U.S. legislators for approval in 1797. Timothy Pickering, the secretary of state, endorsed it and John Adams concurred (now during his presidency), sending the document on to the Senate. The Senate approved the treaty on June 7, 1797, and officially ratified by the Senate with John Adams signature on 10 June, 1797. All during this multi-review process, the wording of Article 11 never raised the slightest concern. The treaty even became public through its publication in The Philadelphia Gazette on 17 June 1797.

To the United Baptist Churches in Virginia in May, 1789, Washington said that every man "ought to be protected in worshipping the Deity according to the dictates of his own conscience."


In an essay on "Toleration," Franklin wrote:

"If we look back into history for the character of the present sects in Christianity, we shall find few that have not in their turns been persecutors, and complainers of persecution. The primitive Christians thought persecution extremely wrong in the Pagans, but practiced it on one another. The first Protestants of the Church of England blamed persecution in the Romish church, but practiced it upon the Puritans. These found it wrong in the Bishops, but fell into the same practice themselves both here [England] and in New England."

Boy - Franklin was right - and the cycle never ends, people never learn.


In fact, nowhere in the Constitution do we have a single mention of Christianity, God, Jesus, or any Supreme Being. There occurs only two references to religion and they both use exclusionary wording. The 1st Amendment''s says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. . ." and in Article VI, Section 3, ". . . no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

OMG. The religious nuts are still on here getting their panties in a bind over this stuff. I can''t wait until ga*y marriage becomes legal in Utah. I gotta see the look on their faces then.

Many of our founding fathers were religious - and those that were not knew enough about PR to put their arguments in religious terms to communicate. But they also wrote a Constitution without religion in it, ensured religous freedom. The Treaty of Tripoli - right there - they stated conclusively that our nation was not founded, in any sense, on the Bible. The Senate unanimously approved that statement, the President signed it.

Our laws are based on standards of justice, ideals, and practical compromises to allow all of us to live together. Our laws are not based on the Bible - any more than the bible is based on the pagan religions that preceeded it - even though the bible uses many concepts, laws, and ideals from a multitude of pagan religions.

And - yeah, even a supreme court justice can get that wrong - just like the justices who ruled racist laws just were wrong back then.
