Comments on: Despite Gas Prices, Americans Hit The Road
With Prices At The Pump Topping $4 A Gallon, More Than 38 Million Americans Are Traveling This Memorial Day Weekend
- I told my friend that a poster said he/she is staying home and due to the price of gas he/she can''t afford to mow the yead. Yes yer can.It does not take gas. I know yer going to say no way it can''t be done. The answer a manual push mower. I used to use one. It is not like yer gas mower. I was a teen girl and mowed the yerd using a push mower. It was not easy. I have not seen one in years. I am 53.

- As a European paying almost 10 bucks per gallon I envy those having to pay only 4. Maybe in the future I can ship my car empty to the US, fill it up and ship it back. My tip.. get used to it.

Time to do some learning. In Europe you pay considerable taxes on your gas, which far more than Americans pay. Western Europe has the added benefit of no one needing to drive to travel from place to place with a rail system that is incredible. - Reply to this comment
- Worse yet is that NAFTA created a traffic jam from Interstate to interstate and highway to highway bringing in trucks from Canada and Mexico. Not only has it put pressure on our highway system, but surely it has put pressure on our gas consumption. This country would do well to develop a rail system that would rival if not equal that of Europe''s.

The U.S. has not developed public transportation as has been done in Europr. When I was there in 1970-1972 in the Army, I didn''t need a car to get around. In the U.S. there are still wide open spaces where no public transportation exists and farmers and ranchers still live a long way away from a store or schools. We are more dependent on cars. - Reply to this comment
- newster I can *see* how car crazy America has become. In the 60s there were very few cars on the road. I lived in a small town in Maine. The road was a dirt one til 69. They tarred it. There were very few cars that used it. I sat under the tree watching them tranfrom a road. We had lovely blue sky. I was 14. The only thing I could think of was the Smart twins loved to race up and down the Fuller Rd. Now they will do it more on a tarred road. One did die as a man I knew told me.Not every one has a car. Ye brought up some thing that we, Vince and I talked about. They can buy 2 or more cars. They can only drive one. I miss the days where were very few cars. Note to persons abroad. I do live udder an American system that is very different from yer nation. It is educational to hear about other nations and what they have/have not done in this matter. I live in Seattle. I use the use and my feet.

- IRAN OPECs second largest producer has stopped conducting oil transactions in US DOLLARS!!

Why should that be a big surprise? The Bush cartel has been doing nothing but threatening them since bush seized power, now its payback time so get ready to pay $10 a gallon.
"At 4 bucks a gallon, people are going to significantly cut back on driving and thus create a surplus of oil and gasoline. Then Opec will cut production because we cant store anymore oil and gas. And then oil and gas prices will keep rising on the fear of Opec cutting production.

More likely CHINA''s booming economy which is demanding more oil will simply buy that up for THEIR use- and they wouldn''t mind $6 or $8 gas - Reply to this comment
