We had an ice storm and lost power for a week in Misouri. (another reason i like Thailand it never gets cold here) We used the fireplace for heat for a week, having to wake up every two hours to put more wood on the fire. We survived but didn''t feel like the fireplace provided any heat. Your right they look romantic in the movies but makes you wonder how our ancestors survived with only fireplaces for heat.

Nationalization is the best way to get prices down, and to provide revenue to offset tax cuts.

That makes perfect sense. They claim they want to drill on Federal lands. Those lands belong to all of us, yet they want to drill and make profits off of us? No sir, if they need Federal lands to drill, then Nationalize it and let us all benefit.

jmcgilvrayI have lived in Thailand for over a year. I will really miss this place. We are coming back to states in September to live in Las Vegas. I also loved living in Vegas before. Where else can you hav an elephant come to your front door and hand feed it regularly ? This has been an amazing experience for me.

"Masters blames it on a new class of speculators led by pension funds and university endowments, which are buying up huge amounts of oil, nearly 850 million barrels more a year than they did just 5 years ago. That nearly matches the growth in Chinese demand, which is often blamed for rising crude prices."

So those who advocate war against the Chinese, they are not the enemy, the enemy is within, and they are the oil companies.

Nationalization is the best way to get prices down, and to provide revenue to offset tax cuts.

Sounds like you need to move to another area before you can''t afford to live there at all.

Ive had a coal stove as well 20 years ago, same work/dirt/dust deal there but LOTS more ash and you have to start a wood fire to get it to ignite, if you dont monitor the fire and knock down the clinkers and ash at the right time before adding more coal, the fire gets chilled by the fresh coal, fades and goes out. Usually thats at night after you banked down the fire and it goes out like 2 AM.
Ive awakened in that scenario to a bedroom about 40 degrees and ICE forming in the dogs water bowl downstairs (Vermont)

Thanks but NO THANKS! like hand washing clothes on a washboard or building a wood fire in the cook stove or for hot water baths- those are the days to remember with nostalgia ONLY, for todays hectic lives we just aint got that kind of time to waste on frivolous menial chores or spending 2 hours hitching horses up to go get the MAIL and groceries.

Woodstoves are the kind of thing that look romantic in the movies, the reality is it becomes a 24/7 CHORE, starting with either buying or cutting, splitting, transporting, stacking firewood, digging it out if you get snow covering the pile, insects, bark and dirt tracked in, ash that gets in the house on everything- you have to scoop out and dispose of the ash which as you shovel it out gets in the air, the floor and on everything.
The stove vasilates from roasting you out of your skin to freezing you out if it goes out at 2 AM or something. Insurance co''s dont like woodstoves either, you could wind up getting cancelled or pay higher premiums.

yes , we also need to bring our troops home and stop foreign aid. We cannot afford to support the world any longer. They will have to learn to be independent.

I am thinking about training one or two of my horses to harness like the Amish do. They drive the 10-12 miles to town, so could I.

Posted by BarbJC1

Yeah you can probably do that, BUT with high speed vehicles they and horses dont mix well on the highways and roads, in the Amish areas people expect them, elsewhere they don''t, that put you at much greater risk of car/horse collisions.

10-12 miles on a horse and buggy would take an hour to get there and an hour back, do you REALLY want to spend TWO HOURS getting to/from the grocery store and also bring back perishables just to save maybe $3 in gas??
If the weather is cold and windy or roasting hot and humid, that 2 hours would be torture.

"acting like "hapless victims" while racking up record profits "

EVERY quarter, record profits they claim they are ''investing'' yeah lets SEE those receipts and invoices for these ''investments''.

" spent $1000 on propane last year using a NEW 92.6% efficiency furnace. The previous year I spent $250.00 heating with wood... the second woodburning stove
Posted by BarbJC1

So you are going to spend all that time dealing with cutting, drying, splitting, stacking, hauling firewood, hauling ashes, loading, TWO wood stoves just to save the diff between $250 and $1000 a YEAR? I run my 90% 100,000 BTU furnace on gas with the therm permanently set to 70, and my gas bill for heat AND hot water for 1100sq ft house is less than yours.
I have R value of 100 worth of insulation in the attic, and I doubled the wall values to R-21 minimum.
I had a wood stove, it was a royal pain in the azz, I''m glad I got rid of it and the dust, dirt, smoke and dealing with that dam firewood.

I tell you what would scare the H**L out of Congress, if all the trucking industry went on strike, all forms of transportation that provide food, supplies and services to this country .

Remember everyone, there is a GENERAL ELECTION in November, use your power of the vote to change it. AND I DON''T MEAN IT IN THE SAME WAY OBAMA IS USING THE WORD CHANGE. I mean use the vote to put the power back in the hands of the people, where it belongs. There has got to be someone we can put in office, and I mean at all levels of government that can be trusted.
