mitchoncbs, every scientific study done on the subject has shown that it is more expensive to kill someone in America.

fibonacci_ you would rather have your taxes go to someone (About 60 grand a year) to keep him/her off of the street and see our own children starve because of all the prisoners getting three squares and a cot for the rest of their lives?

I used to be totally for the death penalty. I know that is always a lame way to argue, I just want to say that I totally understand the reasons for it. I just do not see it as being moral to kill people who are no longer a danger to society, because the government should (as all should) teach people to value life. Imagine if we hand-cuffed them and shot them in the head. No big difference.

And it makes me sick to see people using the "I was using maryjane when I committed the crime. When every pot head knows that maryjane doesn''t lead to something like that....

fibonacci_ , F.Y.I....this creep admitted to it and is trying to use the "I WAS ABUSED AS A CHILD" defense.....anyone growing up in the sixties was abused one way or another to today''s standards. That''s why kids these days are ruling most of the roosts instead of parents.

The level of discourse here is incredible.

1. Justice is not a matter of dollars and cents. It is a matter of securing the rights and freedom of all of us by addressing the wrongful behavior that deprives us all of a safe environment.

2. If administered properly, I believe that capital punishment is a legitimate way to deal with those individuals who show themselves to be incapable of respecting the lives of other human beings.

3. Since our nation''s record of properly administering justice is rather abysmal, we cannot guarantee the appropriate application of capital punishment. Therefore, we ought not to use it except in extraordinary circumstances, and where there is no chance of being mistaken.

And concerns about whether it hurts are irrelevant.
