Demise Of Filly In Kentucky Derby Prompts Debate Over Image And Safety Of Horse Racing
- aforet2
Obviously, you have no clue. Yes, they are bred to run. The issue here is that they are being raced at too young of an age, hence the continuous breakdowns. Laws need to be established to ensure that a horse is 4 years old before racing in a race such as the Derby. A horse can be born on December 31st at 11:59 pm, and on January first at 12:01 am...they are considered to be a year old. Go figure that. January 1st of each year is a horse''s birthday. So a horse can be listed as a 3 year old on paper, but in reality, they may only be 2 or 2 1/2. Their bones, at such a young age, are not mature enough to support their huge bodies in racing. They are also sometimes injected with painkillers in their legs before a race so as not to feel the punishing pain that their legs are being put through. This needs to stop, NOW. I am glad that some powerful organizations are stepping in. I am not a PETA lover. Sometimes they go way over the top on things. But somebody has to do something here. This is all about the mighty dollar. - Reply to this comment
- To whoever said that most of these people whining, don''t care a hoot about abortion...well, you''d be correct. Who needs thousands more rapists, murderers, pedophiles, druggies, dealers and just plain scum in this world? I''d take a horse, dog, cat...even a hampster any day. This is an absolute no brainer, for me. Anyway, if you do not care either way about the treatment of animals, then you don''t belong on this board. You are in the serious minority regarding the subject of this horse. So, really....no one''s taking you very seriously here.

- Horsemeat is not needed for dogfood -- dogs can survive on a vegetarian diet.
These race horses are maybe only 2-3 years old. Maybe older horses have stronger bones -- so maybe the solution is to race only older horses.
These race horses are very fragile looking -- look at how thin their legs are. - Reply to this comment
- Still want to yammer on about 55 horses against THESE numbers killed for MEAT?
Maybe instead of attacking the racing industry you''d better save it for the MEAT industry.
Most horses who end up being slaughtered are brought in by killer-buyers who serve as middlemen for the slaughterhouses. Killer-buyers readily purchase as many horses as possible at livestock auctions around the country and haul them to the plants to be butchered. Many horses are sold at auction by irresponsible owners seeking an easy means to dispose of animals they no longer want. Others, however, are consigned by caring owners who simply have no idea of the fate awaiting the animals.
Horses played a vital role in the history of the United States both as a means of transportation and assistance on the family farm. Today, they continue to serve us and our lives are enriched greatly by them. (USDA)
Additionally, hundreds%u2014perhaps thousands%u2014of horses are stolen each year. Horse thieves make quick money by unloading illegally obtained horses to killer-buyers and slaughterhouses. Slaughterhouses typically kill and process horses within 24 hours, making it impossible to trace and recover animals in time. - Reply to this comment

Last year (2006) over 100,000 horses were slaughtered in one of the three foreign-owned, US-based horse slaughtering facilities located in Texas and Illinois.
The horsemeat trade is hidden from most Americans and the industry wants to keep it that way. Warren Smith, operations manager of a Canadian horse slaughterhouse, was quoted in the Edmonton Journal (3/10/01): %u201CTalking about horses is kind of a scary thing, especially in the West, where people think it%u2019s more of a pet than protein. When anybody starts writing about horses, everybody gets up in arms. Every time we say anything about horse in the paper, there%u2019s always an uproar, so I don%u2019t want to talk about it.%u201D- Reply to this comment

Yeah, stay the hel1 out of private business is right, these legislative MORONS have nothing to do with their time than create new laws because of single incidents or unimportant rare but emotionally charged incidents, these people have their heads on backwards- we are in a WAR with a recession, the dollar has lost 30% of its value, gas is almost $4 a gallon, gezus dont these freaking MORONS have more useful things to legislate??

- This has gotten so blown out of proportion, 1.6 horses per 1000 races, breakdown. Most of the outcry is from those who have not a bit of knowledge about horse racing. Anything to take another Prozac, have another cocktail, and whine. Get off it and move on. It was an animal doing what it was bred to do, don''t hear PETA or anyone else crying about horses past there useful days, being turned into dog food. Get a grip, your prescription will be ready tomorrow.

- "if abortion were outlawed, what a hindrance it would be to worry free s3x huh."
In your dreamworld, in the real one abortions will still go on- in back alleys and in private as it did before. Theres still worry free s3x, if you have an accident and abortion wasnt an option, theres the trash can at the mall, the incinerator or the toilet.

No moron, one horse is worth 10,000 babies to ME, and since the public feels animals are worth grief over the loss and abortion isn''t as obvious by your post, then take a hint and go ADOPT and then **** about it. - Reply to this comment
- slaughters 3000+ unborn children every day and thats swept under the carpet by CBS and most news outlets because they dont want to "step on any toes".
WHO CARES, I sure don''t, those 3,000 are UNWANTED, so flush ''em. Go ADOPT them yourself and put your money where your mouth is, or shut up about what other people do in regards to THEIR body and whether they want to carry a baby and then deal with it for 18 YEARS.
"But the vast majority of these people are staunchly pro abortion. You people are a sick bunch!"
Ypu mean pro CHOICE, and give the fact of the overpopulation problems, every baby NOT born is a big help to the environment and those already here. another car not on the road, another house not built, and all that food not used. Forget changing light bulbs- waste of time, just say NO to breeding and ADOPT one already here. - Reply to this comment

LOL Knew that was coming, how predictable huh? I doubt most of the incidents where innocents did get killed in a war, it wasnt done on purpose. However, with abortion 99.99999 % it is a deliberate act and the unborn child has ZERO percent chance of saving him/her self. At least some of those "innocent children" have a SLIGHT chance of picking up a gun and defending themselvs.. Your argument is weak, come up with a better one or perhaps all that porn has you distracted?
Youre the wacko if you cant define the difference. Check some of the latest poll numbers regarding views on abortion. You''ll find things are swaying toward us "wackos" lol. Youre on the losing it buddy lol :)
This is one Christian that fights back, but unlike you I dont have views that support murder of the most defenseless of all - The unborn.... - Reply to this comment
