States Facing Budget Trouble Consider Releasing Inmates Early To Save Millions
- All those in favor of this program should be required to take one or two and house them in their own homes for a year and report on them as their parole officers.

- Get real people!
We all know why the states are having these huge budget deficits. Those of you who elected "Georgie Boy" and his cronies are one big reason.
1. Tax cuts for the rich. (This money has to come from somewhere)
2. Unjustified war in Iraq (14 Billion dollars a MONTH)
3. Good paying jobs going overseas. (Along with states tax base)
4. Illegals taking jobs at lower wages. (Many do not pay taxes)
5. States having to support and provide healthcare for Illegals. (Plus prisons are full of them)
6. Bush trying to look fiscally responsible by cutting funds to necessary state programs. (The state and local governments have to try to make up for this somehow.)
These are just a few reasons. I don''t see any real relief on the horizon either because of the three choices we have for President;
McCain wants to continue the War, make the tax cuts permanent and give amnesty to all the illegals.
Both Clinton and Obama want to end the war and the tax cuts, but they are already spending the money that they would save on other things. Plus they also want amnesty for illegals.
Plus the fact that you have the far right and far left members of congress who would rather bicker and fight than come together for the good of the American people that elected them. - Reply to this comment

- Sounds like a great idea to me. Load them on a bus and drop them off in Canada. At least they will have health insurance.

- Papabc...I am not saying that criminals shouldn''t be punished, but is long prison sentences really the answer. Clearly not.
Letting addicts free to take/ rob/ commit crime does work? No your right that doesn''t work. Maybe prison is the answer for people who can not get past their addiction. - Reply to this comment

I agree rehab don''''t work, however neither does prison.

What is the answer? What works for a person who wants rehab will not work for a person that does not care. - Reply to this comment
- If a person keep committing "MINOR" crimes, ever after short times in prison then what do we do with them?
What do you say to the victims of their crime.
A crime against society should not go unpunished.
There are different levels of prison''s. Say 1, 2 with 3 being the minor crimes.
Some level 3s do fight Fires, Clean roads, work on prison farms, yada, yada.
These guys/gals in there can still harm you, some are gang members that will kill eventually, many are repeat criminals.
Where do you draw the line and say to society "DO NOT CROSS THIS LINE OR YOU WILL BE PUNISHED, PUT IN JAIL FOR THAT OFFENSE".
There are laws in place NOW, there are punishments, they should be carried out. If $$$ are need then look into what the criminals have that can be take/sold to help pay the cost. - Reply to this comment

- The prospect of financial savings offers little comfort to Tori-Lynn Heaton, a police officer in a suburb of Providence whose ex-husband went to prison for beating her.
She''s a cop and her husband beat on her??? WTH...How does she deal with real criminals on the street? - Reply to this comment
- alcoholics are sent to prison. I''m guessing more crime committed under the influence of alcohol than any other drug.
Rehab works for those that don''t need it because they have made up there minds to quit so they will, rehab is a extortion scam to get the powers that be off the a$$ of the addict/alcoholic. that''s all it''s good for. - Reply to this comment

- gopack443...Again...rehab works for those who are willing to allow it to work. Just like quiting smoking, if you don''t have the will, you will never quit.
Prison on the other hand, does nothing for an addiction. You can get drugs in prison easier than you can on the streets!!!! - Reply to this comment

- papabc...Rehab does work! If you want it to work. If you don''t, it won''t. Seems your nephew and Daughter-in-law don''t want to get better so it isn''t going to work for them.

- papabc...What is your take on alcohol? Should alcoholics be sent to prison?

- We are wasting so much money because of the mislabeling of minor drug offenders and those with DWI''s as "criminals". Aside from chronic offenders, these people do not need to be imprisoned. I cannot believe that it is cheaper to send a drug addict to rehab than to prison, yet our judicial system opts for the latter. The war on drugs has been based on fear instead of rationality. Now America''s penitentiaries are over crowded and unsustainable. Not to mention that studies have proven that those who go into prison for non-violent crimes are more likely to commit violent crimes after their release. The American prison system is only making things worse and needs serious reform.

- papabc...All of those that you mentioned are "minor" they don''t deserve long prison sentences. Thats idiotic. Killers and rapists and the like need long prison sentences. It doesn''t make sense to put a 17 year old in prison 10/15 years because he had *** with a 15 year old. There are other ways of punishing "minor" crimes with out resorting to prison. Do you really think that throwing a rock in a window is so terrible that someone should be imprison for it. How does that help our society. All prison does is make people worse then when they went in.

- papabc...Why are drug addicts sent to prison instead of rehab?

Rehab does not always work &
I have a nephew and have a Daughter-in-law that is addicted to meth. To feed thier addiction they steal from family, work, friends, you.
Then nephew died after 2 years of rehab. too easy to go back to friend into drugs.
The D-I-L is almost no long a family member but she still take what is not her, sell it then buys what will get her the fix. Over and over again
Rehab does not work for everyone and they do not belong in your car/house/business taking what they want. - Reply to this comment
- Let all the convicts go who are not killers, rapist, violent, child molesters.Deploy them to camps to help fight forest fires, built roads ,slave labor, then they can go home ,once proven worthy.etc
