You are at home in the middle of the night and you hear a noise, upon investigation you see the shadows of 2 large men entering your 8 year old daughter''''''''s room. What are you going to do? No gun right?

Oh and please do not play the, I do not have a daughter, or some other cheap reply. Also do not tell me this could never happen in your neighborhood or somethign like that, because it can- anywhere. Please.

jimfinster,

Excellent point. Inner city and many suburban kids these days have been raised in the "gun-fear culture." Most probably aren''t aware of this, but anti-gun sentiment has been initially spread by people who suffered post-traumatic stress themselves, due to an incident involving guns, and they don''t realize their fear is irrational, and they seek to spread mass hysteria--assisted by the media, who sell adrenaline rushes.

Self defense is certainly a legitimate use, as is hunting, or even target shooting. Criminals will always be able to get guns. What an uneven match it would be if they are the only ones that have them! Enough said.

And if guns are outlawed... only outlaws will have guns. Gun control is not about guns anyway, it is about control.

The USA has the highest gun violence rate of any "civilized" country in the world. Why is that? It''''''''s because we have the highest number of guns!!!

That is like saying more people have died after eating a hamburger in America than any other civilized nation. We do not die because we eat hamburgers, it is simply another way to make a statistic look the way we want it to.

You surely have not proven cause and effect. There have been "huge" amounts of guns in the U.S. for a long time, but only in the past 20 years or so has gun violence become so big.

Instead look to our violence-loving society. Go to a movie, and see all the glorified killing and guns. Also, consider how demographics have changed. When I was a boy growing up on a farm, a gun was just another tool. No more or less dangerous than an ax. I was taught how to handle and use a gun safely and with respect. How many children today have that same experience?

Don''''t be so quick to jump to conclusions...

Well said.

"Only a moron in today''''s world will assume they know what everyone else needs..."

I agree with you, but you seem to think that I made that assumption. I did not.

I am sorry then. It seems you are saying I should not want, need or have a gun and are trying to talk me into your opinion. I am not trying to get you to own or want a gun, just don''t try and take mine, or anyone else''s away.

MylDonCBS,

We are always going to have threats that require access to self-protection. Disarming ourselves is insane. In countries that disarmed the people, it''s been catastrophic. In Congo, up to 90% of women in some villages have been raped to the point of losing limbs and body functions because they had no access to firearms for self-protection. In Mexico, corrupt military and police, as well as criminals, rape and enslave people to work in drug packaging operations. In Islamic countries, women are gang-raped because of their clothing. In all cases, these people have no means of self-protection.

We must never relinquish our rights just because a small minority of people do evil and the media spreads mass hysteria in order to gain viewership and readership.

notblue, genralities and "straw men" are two different things. I never used a "straw man" argument, though I have used generalities because certain things are generally true. (For example, if 83% of a certain population is sick, it''s a generalization to say "most of them are sick". But it''s also entirely true.
