Federal Government Hit With 489,000 Claims For Damages Sustained During 2005 Hurricane
- bigsis9903, I could not agree with you more. ~~~~~~~~~~~ I was severely disappointed in the McDonald''''s hot coffee spilled incident. So what if it''''s not labeled? You can argue any side of a case using the right words. I blame the judges for letting stupid people like that actually win that much. Posted by bigsis9903

- I want to build a house below sea level and make everyone else in the country pay to replace it when it floods, no matter how many times it floods. I also want to get vasectomies and vasectomy reversals on alternating months at the expense of taxpayers. I''d also like to lay around in my sometimes underwater house and not work and get welfare money and free food. Then I want to get really fat so I can have an electric cart and a special parking place at Wal Mart. Give me all these things NOW or I''ll sue for a gajillion dollars.

- ""Last but not least, all these people saying it''s a ridiculous amount... Of course it
is, and no they won''''t that''''s the whole point... I seriously doubt that they expect to get that much. It''s a point that you can''''t put a price on the damage as it says IN THE ARTICLE. I don''t think they deserve that much either. I''m not saying I agree with that amount. I was mainly perturbed by some ignorant remarks that some people made. I also don''t think they really expect that much. Someone else mentioned earlier anf I agree with them in that IT''S JUST A PUBLICITY STUNT. There is NO WAY anyone could actually win that case, for that amount anyway. Honestly, if they did, good for them for learning the system well enough, and shame on America for strictly adhering to written laws and not using common sense, which is what JUDGES are supposed to be for. - bigsis9903, What did the private business do? I''m in taxachusetts and though I have OBVIOUSLY heard about what happened with Katrina I do not understand what you mean about private businesses, the hospital/nursing homes thing I get (which is SO wrong BTW). I can see how the hospitals/N.Homes have weaseled out of things but how did the P. Businesses? I think people are so ofended by the atronomical amounts these people are suing for is because of just that, the amounts are SO astronomical. How did the people suing (who have a right to sue, just not to excess) get to those amounts? Their homes could NOT have been worth THAT much money. They could not have had THAT many belongings that they can sue for. I also do not think that psychiatric help (though obviously needed after a traumatic event) could NOT cost THAT much over the span of a lifetime. I do not doubt that people who lived through Katrina went through a LOT and they DO deserve SOME recompense but NOT (by person, not class action which is different) in the Trillions, billions or even millions. ~~~~~~~~~~ I agree with your emphasis on THOSE places but THOSE places, including private business, hospitals, insurance companies, etc. have weaseled their way out of responsibility and what are those people supposed to do then? They go up a notch. It''''s a natural process and I don''''t see why people are so offended by it. Posted by bigsis9903

- bigsis9903, I am not a heartless person and I DO feel for what everyone in N.O. went through. The hospitals/nursing homes who did those things should DEFINATELY be sued. There is NO excuse what so ever for them doing that to sick or older people. We should ALWAYS respect our elders and take care of our sick people. I am glad your friend and the girl made it out, I hope they survived their cancer. Elderly and sick people aside (it should be a given they are saved first) the ones who are more able to leave should have left. The ones who are able to leave and CHOSE not to are the ones I have NO sympathy for. THOSE are the ones I do not think should be able to sue, except to recoup the appraised value of their home/belongings BEFORE Katrina hit. I do not think people who rented should be able to sue for anything except to recoup their personal belongings as they did not own the home they lived in. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yes,I mean they left them with no transportation. A friend of mine had cancer, and the hospital left him and a girl with leukimia along with others. He and the girl made it out, I don''''t know what happened to the others but I have heard several other stories of the same nature pertaining to nursing homes, etc.

- The levee''s were not just inadequately built people, it was planned to have the levee''s by the 9th ward blown to save the French Quarter. They don''t tell you that in the news, but as a local, with friends and family with gov''t jobs... That''s what happened. News Flash!

- bigsis9903, I do not doubt that buses were overcrowded but if people cannot be civilized and let the elderly and infirm (or women with children) on before themselves then N.O. has an even bigger problem and more people to blame... themselves. I do not know what you meant by "Nursing homes, hospitals, and several other business left those people with nothing..." but I hope you do not mean that elderly were left in those places with nothing in which to feed themselves with, IF that is what you mean then THOSE elderly people left behind in THOSE places have EVERY right to sue THOSE places. Also, if the gas station price gouged then THEY should be sued as well. Worse comes to worse, they COULD have walked (with the exception of the elderly and infirm). Elderly and infirm people should have been THE first ones on the buses.

- Last but not least, all these people saying it''s a ridiculous amount and "they''ll feel just a little sheepish trying to explain..." Of course it
is, and no they won''t that''s the whole point smarty. They''re just "speakinup." I seriously doubt that they expect to get that much. The fact of the matter is, I know several people who tried to file much smaller claims (under $10,000) and it took so long for the insurance companies to pay up, that they ended up making there money''s worth in the time frame it took to get the ins co to pay
up. I think they just want the security that they''re not going to end up getting taken advantage of like that. It''s also a point that you can''t put a price
on the damage as it says IN THE ARTICLE. Consider it a public statement for people to realize how bad hurricane victims got screwed, and how long it''s taking them to recover.
I believe in free speech and I''m not saying that people shouldn''t voice any opposition, I can see how on the surface it seems a little out there, but at least know what you''re talking about before you start going off. Jeez people. The problem is that the taxes we paid that were given to the goverment to be used for the disaster and were severely misappropriated, and now people are taking it into their own hands. Do you really thing ANYONE expects to get 3 QUADRILLION dollars??? You are as stupid as you think that person is if you think it''s about that amount of money. - Reply to this comment
