Amid Protests, Council Approves Public Housing Demolition As City Rebuilds From Katrina
- Look NO authorities, can you at least let some of the homeless reside in structurally safe abandoned housing during the winter months before demolishing them? Don''t you have a heart? I''m sure the majority of your homeless poor are good citizens.

- We had the same type of public housing around here. The place was in horrible condition and the people living there did NOTHING to improve their situation. I was FLOORED when a 45 year old GREAT grandmother stated that she''d been there for several generations...it''s supposed to provide low cost housing while you get on your feet. Not someplace to be lived in for 30-40 YEARS. In addition the place was a MESS. The kids ran rampant and caused property damage while their mothers stayed in and bred more. It was a pretty HORRIBLE place.
They should be grateful that it''s being torn down. Hopefully when the new one is built they''ll take care of it and use it as a "starting" block not a permanet residence.
And as far as Katrina goes...get over it! It hasn''t been the only devastating hurricane...It''s been two years now. Property OWNERS are the ones that could still be hurting from this but "renters" WHY???...I know JOB opportunites have been there...There have been job fairs, transportation from the shelters to the job fairs, free living arrangements for almost a year, many even got a credit card for about $2500 to help them get a start... - Reply to this comment
- "Opponents were not immediately available for comment on the decision".
See this is the kind of stupid-a$$ comment that makes Americans not trust the media any more. HELLO you were there covering the opposition, and you talked to them as they were wheeled away in ambulances, why didn''t you ask them THEN, or simply HANG AROUND and ask them after the vote since you were ALREADY ON THE SCENE?
As far as finding other opposition, did you try UM looking in your rolodex? Gee, Democracy Now didn''t have any trouble finding Jacquie Soohen and Rick Rowley, maybe you can go here and do some real journalism for once...do you know how to interview people? They are movie producers, maybe that will get you all excited...

- Seriously - enough with the "I work so hard, and my taxes are killing me!" and "Why should all my tax dollars be used to support welfare!" ***.
You want to know why your taxes are killing you, you poor babies? It''s because there has been a huge increase on defense spending. You know, that war over in Iraq that Bush and Co. got us into? In fact, the top two categories of spending in this country are Social Security, to help your old azz when you retire, and Defense, to fight a pointless war in another country.
So for the love of God, do some research before you post on here. Although, with screenames like "tiddsandbeer" and "poopusbuttus", I wouldn''t be surprised if you don''t know how. - Reply to this comment

- "I work hard whenever I do go to work, and most of my taxes are going to welfare recipients."
Actually, chief, more of your tax dollars are spent on war (or as it is labeled in the budget, "Defesnse"). Check your facts before you start pulling the "I''m such a hardworker" card. - Reply to this comment

- Eventually Americans will wake up to the new reality that the Internet has shrunk the World and that media communications traditionally restricted to the U.S. is now available instantly online "LIVE" World Wide via the infamous Internet! As the U.S. continues to tout the virtues of a free society and Democracy, it would be wise for the U.S. to look over its shoulder and observe what the World is observing, take a good strong self-look and self-evaluation and ask objectively why any nation would want this? The U.S. Democracy is not perfect, but its starting to also not look good either! Time for a reality check!! The whole Worlds watching ...

It is a word game of the elitists and racists, and I am assuming (perhaps naively) that you are not necessarily referring to a group of people by their ethnic heritage. Such apologists for corruption and racism love to take the story of one person, then assume that all people in similar circumstance, and of shared ethnic heritage took the same approach, but the truth is for every one of these people, there are probably hundreds who never saw a cent of aid that was earmarked for them, but then stolen by the administrators. - Reply to this comment
- There are very few success stories about how Katrina victims got a chance at life when they moved elsewhere, got their kids into better schools, got job training, and started earning more money than they ever had in their lifetimes.

- "If I got as much help as you guys got, I''''d be living good." Posted by bennyblack1
How soon we forget the news of how much of your so called "help" was corrupted by those on both "sides of the aisle" who kept gate on the funds, the cronyism, the Governor''s family members stealing large contracts, the mayoral corruption, etc. If you think you would be "living good" on the leftover pennies that fell through greed''s fingers, you are in need of remedial logic training, at best.
My question is if these homes are still occupied, why are they being demolished? Some of the residents don''t have the means to "move to another place" as you suggest. Why? precisely because they are low income, if they could only afford low income housing in the first place, where can they now go, when the price of housing has only increased, but their income has not? - Reply to this comment
- So, if you think I''''m crazy for my opnions, you''''d better think twice about that after the shannanigans that were pulled during Katrina that were NOT the government''''s fault.

- And I''m still hearing that there are a mass of people who are capable of working complaining that the government isn''t taking care of them, when long ago, they should''ve moved, got work, and started taking care of themselves.
I''m really sorry about offending anyone, but the truth is not pleasant. If I got as much help as you guys got, I''d be living good. You guys got jobs HANDED to you. You got job training HANDED to you. You got monies and material gifts that should''ve put you head over heels the status quo. And you BLEW IT!!!!

- He said specifically that "black folks are proud, and that they weren''t GOING to where what was provided." That they were going to look GOOD. Well, charity isn''t very often glamourous. So I can imagine what happened to all the donated clothing that they got from the American people. There are very few success stories about how Katrina victims got a chance at life when they moved elsewhere, got their kids into better schools, got job training, and started earning more money than they ever had in their lifetimes.

- I just believe that when the government shows the compassion enough to help needy people, that those needy people need to take that help, and actually do something with it. I remember distinctly listening to a comedian make sarcastic remarks about the clothing they were given. It was funny, but it really spoke volumes about what they thought about it.
