133 countries have abolished the death penalty, including nearly all industrialized, "first world" nations.

The United States, along with the "great" nations of Afghanistan, Cuba, India, Iraq, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, allow the death penalty.

We''re really keeping fine company, aren''t we, folks?

Thanks and same to you. I''ve enjoyed our discussion and felt that I learned something today. It''s nice to be able to have a back and forth online and have it be (mostly) civil.

You tend to like statistics. Look up how this influences the young to lead the life of crime. We have certain races that tend to create more division that unity in our society, causing tensions and stress.

Gulp! Are we looking at a ''Final Solution'' here? Or a civil war? Secession of the ''Red States?'' perhaps?

If it''s the last one - great! We''ll take California, New York, Minnesota, Washington, Oregon. You guys can have Alabama, Mississippi, South Dakota, New Mexico and Oklahoma! (kidding)

I do. And it is painful for me to see people who have committed horrible crimes go on living when their victims cannot. But we must evolve as a society. We must look at what is creating this problem, how to address it and what to do with those who cannot be allowed to live among us. Again, when we execute people what effect does that have on our society? We become barbarians, no better then the mullahs in Iran. I want the US to be the paragon of justice, morality and human rights. As long as we have capital punishment, our demands to nations like China to respect human right right hollow and false.

Until we do eliminate the death penalty we will live in a brutish and ignorant society caught up in an endless cycle of murder and death.

Roger,

I respect you thought and opinions even though I don not agree with everything you say. Be well and have a great holiday season.

"Firstly, we change one of the fundamental problems in this cycle of murder and death. There are no ''''benefits'''' from having to lock someone up for life. But, again, it prevents an innocent person from being killed."

But what if they kill another inmate or guard?

What if they escape and then kill again?

How bout when some get paroled and then kill again?

It has happened before

Firstly, we change one of the fundamental problems in this cycle of murder and death. There are no ''benefits'' from having to lock someone up for life. But, again, it prevents an innocent person from being killed.

Another interesting fact: Of the top 20 states with the highest murder rate only one (Michigan) doesn''t have the DP. And it follows, of the bottom 20 only 11 don''t have the DP)

It would unfair to compare our crime problems with other nations. There are a lot of factors that influence crime, from family units, to what is %u2018norm%u2019, the diversity of its citizenry, etc, etc..

Here is my take on the %u2018roots%u2019 of the problem. We tend to glamorize crime, from our movies, to our video games, to our accept sports, to the people our children would look up to. Our family unit is going down the drain. You tend to like statistics. Look up how this influences the young to lead the life of crime. We have certain races that tend to create more division that unity in our society, causing tensions and stress.

And for my solution, I don%u2019t think you are ready to hear my solutions.

Roger,

Isn''t that site a Anti Dealth penalty site?

Posted by MikefrMd at 06:51 PM : Dec 17, 2007

Yes, But facts are facts regardless of the source. And the facts are that clearly states with the death penalty suffer a higher murder rate then those that do not. While there are many factors involved, that statistic alone should give any pro-death penalty person reason to pause.

THE PROBLEM HERE is that you seem eager to condem and put your gripes on the table but when a solution is asked

Posted by libsluvsuvs at 06:50 PM : Dec 17, 2007

Fair enough. Firstly, we have to understand why in nations similar to ours (Australia, Canada, the UK, Germany, Japan) the crime rate is so astonishingly lower compared to ours. What is causing the crime in the US? What is it''s roots? What can be done we learn to make our society better and more like other nations who do not suffer the way we do? We need to start asking questions. We need to start examining our nation and why we have the problems we do.

There are no easy answers here. Murder and brutality is engrained in American culture. We must eliminate it. And the best way to start is to stop having the government killing people.

and are you aware of the current situation and problems with this small %????????????????????

Posted by libsluvsuvs at 06:41 PM : Dec 17, 2007

Very. And the statistics clearly demonstrate how utterly worthless the DP is, and how states that have it suffer higher murder rates then those that don''t.

Ironically, the murder rate is highest in the south. And there is where most executions have been carried out. In the Northeast the rate is much lower, and only 4 executions have been carried out since 2001 (compared to 901 in the south.)

"Really? I don''''t think so. I think that actually nails a bunch of your crowd. But hey, believe whatever you need to believe to justify your love and obssession of murder and brutality. You would anyway."

Who said we love murder and brutality....who said we enjoyed the death penalty being carried out. Its just that some of us believe that when you knowingly commit the ultimate crime you have to pay the ultimate price.

When you have killers like Joe Smith, John Couey, and David Westerfield whose guilt is beyond any doubt why do they deserve to sit in cell living, breathing, eating, seeing their families, getting Christmas presents, etc. when their victims mutilated bodies are lying in a casket?

well you seem to be trying to avoid the real issue here..WE ARE TALKING ABOUT CONVICTED MURDERERS..not law abiding citizens..

so i guess murderers killing innocent civilians ARE BENEFICIAL in your logic.

Murder rates for states that have the death penalty are generally much higher then those that do not.

In those states that do not have the death penalty, have a combined 40% less murders since 1990 then those that do.

http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/article.php?scid=12&did=168#stateswithvwithout

I would recommend the pro-death penalty folk take a few moments to examine the evidence on this site:

http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/

It''s really eye-opening and demonstrates CLEARLY how not only ineffective the DP is, how it is actually counterproductive to bringing crime down.
