I don''t know how old you are, but I grew up in the 70s/80s and I think we are living on two different planets. I have seen police officers beating men over the head with sticks as they cried for them to stop. I have seen A LOT of mental illness in poor black communities that only gets resolved by sending people to prison. I have seen sadness beyond measure.
Slavery did not end that long ago. I say so because it was a huge fight in the 1960s to stop it. But, a lot of damage was done already. It takes longer to fix something that was destroyed than it takes to destroy it.
My aspiration was never to get on welfare, so I can''t tell you. None of my family members ever were. I can tell you that our government has more sadness for the rich than the poor, regardless of color. I went to a rich university and I can tell you some of the "gifts" I''ve seen there. - Reply to this comment

- whatithink,
This is exactly what most people are talking about. Things are not like this anymore! Black folks are not slaves anymore and haven''t been for a long time. What I am stressing is that when I was growing up, what I saw as a child, was that our government felt so bad for black people, that they gave them anything they wanted. All I saw was my family couldn''t get any help, but the black kids I grew up around all had better houses, food in their houses, yet no one in the house had a job or cared to get one either. These are the things I grew up with. My mom still taught me not to be prejuduce against anyone who had more than I. - Reply to this comment

- The biggest welfare recipients are large corporations and rich farmers. I''''m very surprised that a Christian society gives such a free pass to the rich in our nation while giving only contempt to the poor.

Oh, yea. They do it in the NAME of the poor, patriotism, religion.... that keeps the contempt misdirected to who''s name they do it in instead of them. - Reply to this comment
- zootallures2,
That is where I start to get confused. I, in no way, think Bush and Cheney are anywhere the same as Sharpton and Jackson. I don''''t get that point. The latter blow a lot of hot air. The former start wars that cost numerous lives and taxes. This is not the same to me.

Only in the sense they keep their sheep from rising up. Oh, Bush and Cheney are way worse. They use the sheeple not just hold them back. But all protect those above them by selling out. - Reply to this comment
