You guys have some freaking nerves to talk about a person just because of their names, many citizens have those kinds of jobs or should we consider USAwatchman an immigrant because he knows how to work one "oh no..wait we can because his post shows USA..

i don''t believe 2 people came together to conceive you. i believe you just ''happened'' - maybe from a lab accident or mutation of some sort - but definitely an ACCIDENT.

SOMETHING to shut the machine down if a body part gets too close to the hazardous parts. ***, sounds like an OSHA no-brainer to me. Or is OSHA part of the problem instead of the solution here?

Posted by kkcbs at 01:09 PM : Nov 09, 2007

OSHA cannot do a thing to stop this king of accident. You cannot stop that type of chipper that fast (1/10th of a second) with any thing that can be moved around with the chipper. He was pulled into and through the drum in the blink of an eye.

In My Humble Opinion (IMHO)

Thirty-one people have been killed in wood chipper accidents between 1992 and 2002, according to a 2005 Journal of the American Medical Association report.

There are usally 8-10 people working on a crew
FOR THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE WORKED ON THESE MACHINE
THAT IS A FANTASTIC SAFETY RECORD

More people are killed in swimming pools
================
PEOPLE here is some more WISDOM to those who want hear

FIRST RULE working with a TRACTOR
TURN IT OFF BEFORE YOU GET OFF

I can''t even explain the number of people who are killed by a PTO
POWER TAKEN OFF the ENGINE

LONG HAIR - it will scap you
LONG SLEEVES - it will ripe your arm off

FAST MOVING PART are to be RESPECTED
for the DAMAGE they can do a FRAGILE HUMAN BODY...

The ACLU will be suing the tree trimming service because Mr Gonzalez-Ferrer apparently couldn''t read the big warnings posted on the machine. They were in English.

Common sense tells most people to pay attention and kep away from moving parts, isn''*** odd how people today seem to need ALL these safety devices, fences, sensors, warning stickers and interlocks yet 125 years ago machines did not have safety guards, a lathe or any kind of machine run from a steam engine or motor via a belt had NO guard covering the belts, gears, bare electrical contacts or spinning shafts.
Oh yes, accidents did happen sometimes, but not like today.
This is what I attribute to the "dumbing down" of America where the basics of how to live are not taught, that is why you have idiot teens and kids drinking drain cleaner or antifreeze because they thought it was cool-aid due to the same COLOR- forget about the stupidity of something thinking cool aid is always stored in gallon containers the garage utility cabinet or trunk of the car... Forget that the label says CAUTION!! POISON!! AVISO!! all over it.

I swear, some people, and many kids today couldn''t find their way out of a dark closet let alone figure out how to us "complex" machinery like a lawn mower or chipper without getting their arm taken off or worse.
They may be wizzes on computers but faced with survival in the woods lost, they are dead without a cell phone.

Sorry dude, i get your point now, i read it wrong.....
If there was a safety device on that thing, like a footswich, it might have been avoided all together.
Can you imagine.. no.....too gruesome to even think of a way like this to go, one minute youre working,
next youre being pulled into grinding metal parts.
Posted by rokero69 at 01:16 PM : Nov 09, 2007

FYI
It not grinding metal parts

It is a HEAVY metal drum with one or more carbide blades
spinning at THOUSANDS of RPM

the energy from the ENGINE is transferred into KINETIC ENERGY (rotating steel drum)
the blade CHIPS (i.e. why the call it a wood chipper)
at the what ever mass that is put into the machine

I even had to clean the blade a couple of times
I had to craw into the receiving cone

let me tell you first hand,
even with the machine off

YOU DO NOT WANT BE ANYWHERE IN THE RECEIVING CONE

IT IS DESIGNED TO CHIP UP ALL THE WOOD(..etc)
THAT IS PUT IN IT

THERE ARE
TENS IF NOT HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS
OF THESE MACHINE IN THIS COUNTRY ALONE

QUOTE
""" Thirty-one people have been killed in wood chipper accidents between 1992 and 2002, according to a 2005 Journal of the American Medical Association report. """

THERE HAS TO BE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE WORKED
WITH THESE MACHINE WITHOUT GETTING KILLED

WE DON''T NEED A NANNY STATE
TO KEEP US ALL ALIVE

It Was An Accident, i cant believe some sugggest a low IQ was the cause of it. I.E. Stupidity.
Has anyone posting actually worked on a Machine such as this one? Armchair Quarterbacks,
What Qualifies you to make such statements?

I didn''t say the guy was stupid...He could have been a genius for all I know...But it is what it is...A STUPID MISTAKE...A STUPID ACCIDENT...

I liked MityWhity''s idea. Sounds pretty simple to me. Every machine in the factory (ours, anyway) has laser light curtains, foot pedals, SOMETHING to shut the machine down if a body part gets too close to the hazardous parts. ***, sounds like an OSHA no-brainer to me. Or is OSHA part of the problem instead of the solution here?

jowand SORRY

YOU HAVE SO MUCH DIFFICULTY WITH THE TRUTH
WHEN I HAD THE JOB (AND WORKED ON THE MACHINE)
IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME VERY SIMPLY

YOU DON"T GET, TAKEBACKS
YOU DON''T GET SECOND CHANCES

YOU GIVE THE MACHINE THE RESPECT IT CAN TAKE YOU LIFE
WITH LITTLE OR NO NOTICE

LIKE A HORSE YOU ALWAYS TREAT A HORSE
AS IF IT IS ALWAYS TRYING TO KILL YOU

AND YOU WILL LIVE TO RIDE ANOTHER DAY...
