Carol Anne Gotbaum Resists Arrest, Behaves Erratically On Surveillance Video
- Next flight was in two hours! Get some food & a soda. Buy a magazine. Before you know it, you''d be in the air.
Why was missing her flight the end of the world? Rehab was going to start without her? She''s mentally ill, on some type of drug (prescription or illegal) or really drunk. A "normal" or reasonable person would hardly make anywhere near this fuss when they miss their flight. Having to be restrained by police? Come on now. - Reply to this comment
- DUH!! Because she wouldn''''t have been alone if someone would have accompanied her.Posted by GrammaWhamma at 06:32 PM
I know you come from Backwater, Nowhere, but could you do a little more than write DUH!!? I mean, I know you probably had to look up the spelling in a dictionary, and no doubt Jumbo has a fine dictionary, but get real. Now had the lady been accompanied, that would not have guaranteed that she wouldn''t have become upset, arrested, and still have died from strangulation. The fault is of law enforcement for being negligent. Now, take your time and look up the big words in the dictionary over there at Jumbo''s fine grade school library. - Reply to this comment
- Let me say this, th cops were under no obligation to babysit her. inmates find all sorts of ways to kill themselves if they want to die. the whole problem is that her family chose to allow her to get herself to rehab, knowing she was depressed and suicidal. It is not airport security''s job to babysit her because she is unstable. They, more than anyone would have likely wanted the proper authorities to come get her as soon as possible, once they suspected she was off her meds, off her nut, or off the wagon. She got no special treatment, neither was she neglected. I repeat, nobody here would give a hoot about this story if it happened to someone "else"

H-E-L-L-O??!! They were talking on the phone with the husband before they found her dead and he said that she was in a deep depression, suicidal and on her way to rehab!
Now I don''t know, it could be just me, but I would say that was definitely a pretty good sign that he KNEW she wasn''t in a very good mental state.
Would YOU want your husband/wife traveling to rehab in a deeply depressed and suicidal state???? - Reply to this comment
- Are you people that stupid I canm''t believe your still saying that she was a alcholic and deserved to die. A first time offender chained to a table and left alone and laughfed at and begging for pity and SOB''s think that''s funny. I pray you get chained to the table see how clear your thinking will be. what is wrong with you people. Are you just stupid sheep?

- Would you please explain how any of this would have prevented the police from negligently leaving her alone in a cell, shackled and handcuffed, so that she could strangle to death with no one around?

- If I hadn''''t been there with her, she would have most certainly been arrested. Mentally ill people need someone to accompany them on trips. Drunks are no different. They don''''t have the ability to get themselves out of trouble.Posted by mennowoman at 02:02 PM

- My guess is that she waited and was actually checked in for the second flight leaving at 2:58 and was denied boarding...that''s when she snapped like a twig. That flight would have already been in the boarding process or boarded by then.

- She missed her flight at 1:06pm. She did not freak out and cause a disturbance until 2:49pm (after talking to her husband on the phone several times) almost time to board her next flight. I''m guessing that her husband said something to her that caused her to go into a tangent. The family didn''t show any support for this poor woman by letting her fly alone. They probably degraded her for being an alcoholic. (I am only theorizing this scenario because my best friend is an alcoholic and I know how degrading her husband and family are to her.) I just would like to know what happened between 1:06pm and 2:49pm to cause this woman to go into a rage. I also think that security should have checked on her frequently.

- Checking every 15 minutes, on what appeared to be a normal drunk and disorderly - that''''s fine.

Where does it say that she was drunk at the time of her arrest you idiot?
How do you know it wasn''t a reaction to medication or a mental breakdown?
Part of the -JOB- of a cop is to assess if a person needs medical attention, which in this case they NEVER did.....that''s why she died.
If someone was really monitoring this insane crazy person who was obviously a threat to herself, she''d still be alive.
It really amazing how many different kinds of haters of humanity a story like this will bring out of the closet.
And they call us a "Christian nation". LMAO!! - Reply to this comment
- OMG...It''s so clear in that video, that right off the bat, they were dealing with an absolutely insane crazy person who had -completely- lost her mind.
It''s crystal clear she was not normal and was pleading for help.
They should have called the paramedics -immediately-...the minute they arrested that poor sick woman. - Reply to this comment

- So she was deeply depressed, suicidal and on her way to rehab. ALONE. WOW, that''s some family she has. Mommie-in-law was saying what a dear sweet person she was, so it makes me wonder why someone wouldn''t help this sweet person? Either she wasn''t that sweet or her family are a bunch of JERKS. AND sweet or not someone should still have been with her.
And when the husband announced that she was suicidal, that means that the authorities could jump on that as the cause of death, true or not.
And as far as the cops killing her goes, someone said that that would make it premeditated, not so. It could have been accidental. If she was fighting them, there is a possibility that she got hit in the wrong place or something. I can''t see in THIS situation that they would have DELIBERATELY killed her. - Reply to this comment
- Police said Gotbaum was shackled to a bench with a chain about two feet long and left alone in a holding room for about six to eight minutes. She was then found unconscious and not breathing, with the chain from the shackle pulled against the front of her neck.
"Because a person is handcuffed does not make that person safe to the officers or to themselves," Allard, a 32-year police veteran who works as a police procedures and practices liability consultant, told Early Show co-anchor Hannah Storm.
"They should have been keeping an eye on her?" asked Storm.
The above says it all and those incompetent airport security officers doing the job competent americans won''t do should be held less liable than the politicians who have become hoes to the right wing who have steadily fought to disassemble our systems for private profiteering. - Reply to this comment
- I''m astounding at the profound ignorance on the part of the uneducated unexperienced blaming the family. When someone is restrained by legitimate law enforcement in an advanced civilization, it is expected certain protocols are in place. Our countries systems are failing. We are becoming a 3rd world nation run by 3rd world immigrants.

- ARe you KIDDING ME? What the heck drives yo conspiracy theory nuts? There is NO WAY that a coroner or medical examiner can block access, or tell another examiner, "you can look at everything but her arms, or her head". or, ''You cant examine her torso"! What the hell are you talking about? the woman struggled and fought the cops before she was shackeled and she apparently harmed herself after that. She squirmed and thrashed and more than likely fell down , of COURSE she will be bruised. The slightest bump will bruise on a body after death! face it people, Nobody killed her . PUUUULLEEEEZ!

- Well, on psychiatric units a constant line of sight is required when someone is restrained. Is it within the protocol of security to restrain someone distraught or otherwise calm and walk away for periods long enough one could suffocate? Does their protocol require they assess the restraints for any impairment they may be causing to circulation? Was food or drink offered at least every 15-30 min. Was a female security officer available to assist the restrained with voiding? (po*oping or pee*ing). Probably not as is with the free ticket given to Blackwater private security.
