- The poverty rate in the year 2000 was 11.3%, so we still haven''t come back down to the same level we used to be at: http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/poverty/histpov/hstpov2.html

- The Great Emperor Bush II is dismayed upon hearing the news that poverty levels have dropped and that the number of uninsured has gone up. One of the great Emperor''s goals is to force everyone to buy insurance at high premiums to make the insurance companies even more profitable than they already are. Also, because the poverty levels have dropped, the Great Emperor feels that there may be a revival of the middle class meaning less family wealth for the wealthy "elite" of which he and his court are members of.
Both of these prospects are unacceptable to the Great Emperor and he has (using his role as The Great Decider) decided to sign an executive order requiring requiring every man, woman, and child to buy insurance of all types (including auto and home insurance for those who don''t have a car and have lost their homes thru foreclosure) to force them back into their appropriate poverty levels (and create greater profits for the insurance companies)!

Your welcome.
I think if the founding fathers of the USA could see America of the 21st Century they would be saddened by how far the nation that they built has fallen so far behind the rest of the democratic world. The United States has lost her moral compass and it up to you my southern liberal friends,to take back your country and restore the greatness and esteem that America once had but has since lost. You will have my complete support

- ratchow1962,
Thanks for your comments and support. Republicans have forgotten that the greatest leaders of their party(Lincoln & Teddy Roosevelt) were liberals. They''ve been brainwashed into thinking it''s a dirty word.
Political history in America goes in cycles and I think we''re at a turning point that will lead us down a far different path. Hopefully, we''ll do it right and in a way that can benefit everyone generally.
Thanks for the faith and support, your comments are appreciated. - Reply to this comment
- The liberal bias of the mainstream media cracks me up! They can''''''''t report any good news without negating it with bad news, even if the good and bad news have nothing to do with each other.
They simply can''''''''t bear the thought of reporting anything good happening during the Bush administration, so they have to throw something bad in there as well.
How about, "Unemployment hits all time low - but pitbull attacks on humans increased this past year".

- "The poor are politically mute. What rational politician would listen to the poor? They don''t vote, they don''t write checks, why care?"
Larry Jacobs,
political scientist
This is stupid. There are many poor people who are informed about the issues and who vote in every election. They have a voice if they choose to use it. And who the h*e*l*l does Larry Jacobs think he is questioning why politicians should bother to listen to the poor. I don''t think I ever saw this attitude until the Bush administration created the vote-with-your-check-mentality. - Reply to this comment
- We keep hearing all the statistics on the uninsured but we have no idea how many of the uninsured are illegal aliens. The number of citizens without health insurance may be far less than the illegal aliens.

- Here in Canada universial healthcare is not perfect and has many major flaws, bit overall,
it does work and by that I mean you are not left with a huge doctor or hospital bill to pay.
Why are my southern neighbors who belong to the republican party afraid of paying more taxes when in return for those extra taxes they will get healthcare that can never ever be taken away from them.Seems to me that some americans only think of themselves, when they should be thinking of the well being of all their fellow americans. The USA is the only industralized nation in the world that does not have universial healthcare for her all her citizens both rich and poor.
Please tell me what are you republicans really afraid of.Socalism is not communism.Moving the USA more to the left in politics and giving your citizens universal healthcare would do you nation a world of good.
One more thing why has the name Liberal become such a dirty word down there.I am so sad that the United States,a nation I love and respect with all my heart and soul and to me is the greatest nation on earth,is sinking into a morass where the attitude has sadly become now
Me,Myself and I and to hell with everyone else. - Reply to this comment
- The reason the poverty level has dropped is because all the people who were in the poverty level are now in a new level "Help I''ve Fallen And I Can''t Get Out"!

- So... from what I see this means families are making more money, which means less need/ability to obtain federal funding/assistance. Employers are cutting back on health insurance, because it''s too expensive for even them to afford. This means the families just above the poverty line now can''t get assistance, but they sure as heck can''t afford health insurance. Awesome.

Why do you dems keep pushing socialism? And you call us republicans communists! Seriously, you are so confused.
No, we call you Repiglicons Nazis or Fascists, which are both about the same, or self-centered bigots. Regardless, fact is that you self-centered pigs are nothing more than a regional party of the original Confederate States, plus maybe Kansas and Utah. Not quite enough for your regional party to win any federal elections in any of our lifetimes. Americans hate extremists, and thats all you GOPigs have to offer the USA these days. - Reply to this comment
- I read another story that noted that incomes had actually declined a little over 1%; the lower rates of poverty in families was strictly due to more families having more members working (a higher percentage of families having husband and wife or older children still living in the house working - in many families now, the older children can''t get a good enough job to afford their own place so they stay at home with parents).
I wonder why CBS (mainstream media) would not want us to know that.
And on another issue; I do notice an extreme number of comments from certain persons; as if they have nothing else to do all day than stay on certain pages. Being a computer old-timer (1979) and remembering the old BBS days, we used to have a lot of traffic from people posing as adults insisting they could send high voltages over phone lines, etc. and were caught out to be children. If you aren''t a child, quit acting like it;comment and move on with your life. - Reply to this comment
