Comments on: Bridges Under Scrutiny As Minn. Mourns
As Many As 30 People Still Missing In Wake Of I-35W Bridge Collapse; At Least 4 Dead, 79 Injured
- How could this happen? The Inspectors did their job and notified the State 2 years ago this Bridge had problems that needed to be addressed and the reports were ignored, simple enough. The Inspectors did their job! How could this happen? Easy, whoever the Inspectors reported to didn't do their job. A classic example of someone getting paid to do a job and not giving a s.h.i.t!! These types are all over the place in jobs across America, we all know them too, don't we? How many other Bridges across the U.S. are waiting to suffer this same fate due to neglect? Heads should roll, someone is responsible. A national embarrassment!

- This tragedy is a microcosm of this country's current state.
The US is chipping away, falling down piece by piece. It's happening at the hands of the corrupt government, and being allowed to happen at the hands of the ignorant general public. - Reply to this comment
- Lets hear from the economists and business leaders. Afterall, america is best run like a business. That's what the neo con boys have been telling us for at least 25 years.
Does it make sense to repair an old antiquated factory or operate it past the time its return becomes inadequate and no longer justifies paying for the cost of its overhead?
Same with america. It's getting old. The right wing corporatists elected to minimize government bureacracy like the U.S Army Corp of Engineers have underfunded such repair like good business people knowing it just doesn't make good business sense to keep patching an old antiquated machine.
So, I guess like good global entrepreneurs the robber barons will be investing in Dubai. - Reply to this comment
- CBS says "HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?"
Answer (you inept fools): The same way Katrina happened. There is more money in stealing Iraqi Oil and the endless WAR business. ONE TRILLION dollars will be spent in Iraq.
CBS, maybe you should have been asking questions and pointing out the pre-war LIES, instead of cheerleading George Bush into an unprovoked INVASION . - Reply to this comment
- I live in Minnesota and under our present Governor the roads and bridges have been ignored. I live on a gravel road and in alot of situations this gravel road is smoother than the paved state hi-ways. Our governor is opposed to raising taxes but yet he has put "fees" on almost anything he could. Maybe its time to put a "fee" on gasoline or cars so we can fix these problems. Its going to take money and that money has to be raised one way or another.

- I wish Bush would just stay away. His visit adds insult to injury.

- Here in Minnesota the people who earn more than $400,000 per year pay 9% taxes , with everyone else paying 12%. These tax cuts have been accompanied by cuts in education, law enforcement and TRANSPORTATION-thanks to our republican governor.

- I remember going to the gas pumps a few years back to be greeted by a sign that told us that the price included about 40 cents per gallon tax. Recently, that sign was changed to say, "All taxes included". The gas taxes we pay are supposed to go into a fund to take care of our roads and bridges. On talk radio stations in Texas, I'm hearing suggestions that we sell naming rights on bridges to raise money to fix them. Huh? Where's the money going we're ALREADY paying in?
I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of the lies of career politicians of both parties whose vision cannot see beyond the next election. Some of the prior comments on this seek to blame President Bush. Grow up, idiots. Politicians of all stripes, party affiliations, etc. who can only think about re-election bear a lion's share of the responsibility and need to be held accountable. There are some accessories to murder in public office if not, some are guilty of criminaly negligent homicide. It's high time that we the people get some attention. Or maybe our memories should be a bit longer come election time. - Reply to this comment

- Isn't it sad that in this day and age, this is how we get major things done? Matter of life and death things. We allow our representatives in Washington to **** our taxes away until a disaster happens and lives are lost .. then we react (ala Katrina). What a shame! To those poor people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time on the bridge, rest in peace. Hopefully, your deaths will now prompt some action so that others may live in the future.

- Realistically, I don't expect that this incident will change anything, especially the greed, corruption, injustices or conservative genes built into in most Americans and Corporate America. As a democratic society, the only thing that I'd like to see is that all detected deficiencies whether in our bridges, railways, roads, sewer systems, and all other entities which are routinely inspected, be made public. At least then I'll be able to make an educated choice as to whether or not to drive cross a particular bridge, drink the water, or any thing else that we are publicly made aware of that is "deficient".
