- I am not defending Prof. Churchill and too feel he should have exercised better judgment, but there is legitimacy to one of his claims. I too am a historian, and the Mandan Tribe was entirely wiped out by smallpox, and there is an abundance of scholarly literature proving it. And it should be noted that the U.S. army did use smallpox as a biological weapon. I am not sure what sources Prof. Churchill used to cite the 1837 incident, but these facts are not coincidental.
