Imus Dishonors Remarkable Women
by Tom Minnery, senior vice president, government and public policy
Crass remarks overlook remarkable life achievements.
The despicable comments by radio shock jock Don Imus about the Rutgers women%u2019s basketball team are a tragedy. And it%u2019s an even greater heartbreak that all the media attention on Imus overlooks the remarkable group of women he dishonored.
This handful of brilliant players and one remarkable coach represent the best of up-from-the-bootstraps America. The Imus idiocy has cast them and their achievement into the shadows. What a pity.
It%u2019s easy to dismiss Imus. He has built his career on saying outrageous, indecent, racist, even blasphemous things. He%u2019s called Dr. Dobson a %u201Cnut%u201D and even challenged him, on-air, to a fight. Nothing offensive that comes out of his mouth should surprise anyone. That%u2019s who he is.
The players%u2019 stories, on the other hand, are inspiring.

- Where would Martin Luther King be on this? Would he be so unforgiving? Jackson and Sharpton are not in that league.
They are attempting to ratchet up their youth when they were weak and under achievers. They do not speak for black people; they speak for the next paycheck...
And to top it off...what would Jesus say? Jackson and Sharpton are certainly not in that league. - Reply to this comment

- Al Sharpton is pushing this envelope to pay off the debt he owes to the Federal Election Commission. So is this his new "tawana brawley"...need money, be on TV, be interviewed, etc? Al Sharpton does not have a real job; he does anything for a dollar. He plays any card for a buck.
He's an ambulance chasin' lawyer willing to play the black card while searhing for another Tawana Brawley. Is the Rutgers team the next Tawana Brawley? - Reply to this comment
- While we're at it. Don't the American People deserve an apology from Impeached President Bill Clinton for his adventure with Monica and lying under oath?
Of course, when Hilary becomes President she will have the authority to pardon Wild Bill?
Why the double standard? I understand the Reverends Al & Jesse were probably busy with their other priorities during this time; but where were the Reverends' when this Country needed spiritual guidance & healing.
Now don't crucify me as I'm just the messenger.

- The normally idiotic Imus actually made an amusing comment. I congratulate him. The humorless PC CBS crowd is having a big tee-hee. Big Deal. I can%u2019t wait for the reprobates at CBS to get out of their guarded communities and smell the coffee.
Snap out of it CBS, you are losers and the end is near. You%u2019ve been thoroughly discredited for many years. Why don%u2019t you take that old fossil Walter Cronkite and have HIM make an indignant statement. Hell, I could use the sleep.
It provides no end of amusement when the %u201CHuman Rights%u201D advocates resort to the use of some dumb Negro snake oil salesman preacher to make their point. I hadn%u2019t realized you folks had gotten so lazy. - Reply to this comment
- If Limbaugh, Hannity, and Savage are allowed to spread their country-dividing brand of hate across the airwaves of America, there is no real need to censor Al Sharpton.
It is just a sad commentary on what what passes as the Voice of America these days. - Reply to this comment
- I certainly enjoyed David Gregory asking Sharpton about the Tawana Brawley case. CNN, CBS, MSNBC, etc. need to stop giving Sharpton a venue for his hate mongering. He has his own venue and those that want to hear it can tune in. I don't tune in and I don't want my choice of shows to promote it.

- Remember how Jesse referred to New York as hymie town. No one dared chastise him. Double standard you betcha!

Actually, there was a firestorm over that, too. But there was nothing to fire or suspend the man from. - Reply to this comment

I would like the link to this information, please, pepperwood2.
Bush's war in Iraq as of today has cost American taxpayers $415, 961, 079,000.
"That too is money that could otherwise go for groceries, child expenses, school expenses, the mortgage and bills"

- Al Sharpton once again is completely going after the wrong person. Imus said something stupid, hes old and was only trying to make good radio but took it to far. Theres many other things that Al could be doing to help the community instead of going after imus....why doesnt he try and apologize after he headed the march to upstate new york about a girl who claimed to be kidnapped but later was found to be lying. Grow up al.

- My question for Rev. Al is did he ask Isaiah Washington for his resignation when he called his co-worker a "***" on television? Yeah I didn't think so, get over yourselves this is America not "AFRICAN America" If half of the african americans researched the history of the American Indians or the treatment of the Jews who were tortured during the Holocaust they would think twice about trying to inflict they're pitty party on every white person in the world...

- Why doesn't Reverend Al and Jesse Jackson go after the black rap singers who promote killing cops, gangs, homeys, etc. in their music. Now that's what I call more severe than anything Imus might say. Get over it. Remember how Jesse referred to New York as hymie town. No one dared chastise him. Double standard you betcha!

- Hilter did a lot of good things for some people. That does not mean that he wasn't an evil person. I'm not comparing Imus to Hitler, but the rational that if a person raises some money for some sick kids should makes him exempt from criticism is ridiculous.

- Imus is many things..but a racist is not one of them. Let's be real...not unlike the Simpsons Cartoon show...everybody is an open target. Not just the blacks.
Tell me how many other people donate time and raise more money for charity than he does? Not the first time he has used the term "hoe" and now all this grand huff huff. I didn't notice any rebuff on his comments about Britney Spears or Rosie or many others I could mention.
Get over it. Stupid comment yes...Crucify the guy...I don't think so. And do some math. The Great Reverand Al..accepts more money in donations than he ever raises and certainly likes the spot light more also. - Reply to this comment
- Brother Al's & Jesse's real values: Brother Al's real agenda in congress. To raise taxes on the poor & miniorities of this great nation.
Use your intelligence and search it out for yourself. Thank you very much!
House Dems Pushing for Largest Tax Increase in history. Experts say tax hike would devastate families Meanwhile, conservatives are demanding tax relief be made permanent.
Brian Riedl, senior budget analyst for the Heritage Foundation, said liberals are working hard to convince Americans they're not really raising taxes.
"The fact is that in 2010, tax rates will increase and the government will begin collecting hundreds of billions of dollars more than if the tax rate stayed at the current level," he said. "A scheduled tax increase is still a tax increase."
The average tax hike per household would be more than $2,641 annually. In addition, the child tax credit would be reduced from $1,000 per child to $500, and the marriage penalty would be brought back into the tax code.
According to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, if the president's tax relief is not made permanent, a family of four earning $50,000 would see taxes go up 132 percent. A single parent with two children earning $30,000 would see taxes raised 67 percent.
"That's money that could otherwise go for groceries, child expenses, school expenses, the mortgage and bills," he said.
"It's a tax hike."
The real motivation is Democrats want to increase spending on their favorite programs, he said. - Reply to this comment

- It has to be a slow News week. One day it's Bernie, which is a piece of scum. Now let's put it to the I-Man,who has raised millions for kids with cancer and give it all away. If we take down the Imus's of the world that do great things for the unfortunate kids, what are we saying about ourselves. Anyone that has watched his program knows it's on the edge. If you don't like what he say's change the friggin' channel.

- Imus is way too old to be making such foolish comments. If he doesn't know better, then he needs to be fired. If it had been reversed, I am sure punishments would have been administered rather harshly.
He is trying too hard to mirror Howard Stern's antics. - Reply to this comment
