Elizabeth Edwards hit it right on the nose. God is not going to protect human beings from their own folly, or from life in general. If bad people are abusing others, it is up to us to step in.

I had to think about a God who would not save my son. Wade was%u2014and I have lots of evidence; it's not just his mother saying it%u2014a gentle and good boy....You'd think that if God was going to protect somebody, he'd protect that boy. But not only did he not protect him, the wind blew him from the road. The hand of God blew him from the road. So I had to think, "What kind of God do I have that doesn't intervene%u2014in fact, may even participate%u2014in the death of this good boy?" I talk about it in the book, that I had to accept that my God was a God who promised enlightenment and salvation. And that's all. Didn't promise us protection. I've had to come to grips with a God that fits my own experience, which is, my God could not be offering protection and not have protected my boy."

We do need a Savior

A savior HAS been provided; our own free will. Whether you believe that is a gift from God or simply a part of the human psyche in general, it is US who need to save the children. And that means, no mercy for the predators. Any mother who would say that she would make the child comply with such abuse is completely devoid of the maternal instinct, regardless of anything that's happened to her in life. She's not being forced to do it by another; she has made a conscious decision to do it on her own.
